Mister Rogers first welcomed us kids to the neighborhood 40 years ago today. [More:] Fred Rogers remains the only famous person I've ever shed real tears for when he died. His 1969 speech to the U.S. Senate, in defense of public broadcasting, still gives me goosebumps. Goodbye, Mister Rogers.
Fun Fred Fact: both Michael Keaton and George Romero (of zombie fame) started their media careers working for Mr. Rodgers.

Love Mr. R. What was the name of the town they used to go to? Make believe land?

Aw man! Someone (can't remember who, now) on MetaFilter linked to this Mr. Rogers list yesterday or today. Made me tear up.

Oh, that's a cool list.

Yeah, my last link up there (the "goodbye" one) got me choked up when I watched it. I should have posted from home. :)

I saw that too, about what a decent man he was and how his Christianity basically informed his wonderfulness and he wouldn't let it be twisted into hatred or bad talk about anyone. I had the same reaction, taz.

I hate to get political, but I passed an anti-abortion protest the other day that was so offensive and hateful. I thought, "If more people were like Mr. Rogers ... if we all woke up in the morning intent on loving each other despite our faults and differences ..."

Well, it's a nice dream.

"Won't you be my neighbor..." I used to like Mr. Rogers. I liked almost everything about the show, but as I got older (and my own kids watched the show) the kingdom aspect kinda annoyed me. I'm not sure if it was the worn look on the tiger or the actors, but either way I wished that part of the show had been updated a bit.
