Presidents Day! How are USian and ex-pat bunnies celebrating? [More:]

I can't find the bunting, I have two jello molds to make, but the mac and cheese is ready to go in the oven. All the in-laws will arrive about three, it's too cold and wet for bocci balls, so I'll do pin the ponytail on the Founding Father for the kids, even though they are probably getting too old for it. I need to pop next door to see if Bunny has a spare gallon of JD because the liquor stores are closed (whoops!) The only reason I'm online at all is to print out the definitive lyrics to "American Pie" so the annual drunken singing of it doesn't end in fisticufs again!
I may go buy pants.

I'm pretending to work, but mostly just trying to keep my head off the keyboard.

Umm... working?

What, people get this day off?
posted by muddgirl 18 February | 10:06
Yes, muddgirl. My partner's office is closed today. Bastard.
posted by BoringPostcards 18 February | 10:08
I'm doing laundry!

I'll probably go to the beach and read Getting Things Done later.

Working. Since I am in the Classified bargaining group, we have it in our contract that we work on President's day, for some reason.

It's actually a good time to get stuff done in the buildings, since they are devoid of kids and teachers.

The office is closed, but I'm at work. However, it's 61 degrees out and I'm having trouble maintaining the self-discipline to stay here.

Having a migraine, being without my ADD medication, and missing a History exam that I will hopefully be able to make up because I studied all day yesterday.

Holiday Game! Identify the two true factoids in my original post.

We took the puppy to the vet this morning.

Now I am trying to work up the gumption to go outside and tend to my plants.

The kids have school and I have work and a sneaking suspicion that rainbaby is posting purely ironically, since they ain't no way she's making jello molds for the founding fathers. Hee. I don't think anybody celebrates president's day except furniture stores and why that connection exists has long eluded me.

In Canada, it's the first year that most of the provinces have an official statutory holiday. I'll be going into work in a few minutes to catch up on stuff. It's a provincial holiday, and the province that I'm in (Manitoba), it's officialy called Louis Riel Day.

Those are true. I hope that you are kidding about the JD.

I'm working, but I'm taking the holiday on Thursday. I will be celebrating that day by going to the dentist for the first time in..... a long time.

*idly wondering how they celebrate President's Day in Greece*
posted by danf 18 February | 10:28
danf, wrong, wrong.

TPS, oof, good luck. You should be fine, thanks to your youth and strong constitution. I think the twice a year dentist thing is a scam - a healthy adult with no teef problems could get away with once a year, but try telling that to the dentists.
posted by rainbaby 18 February | 10:29
Thanks, I hope so. I do floss everyday!

As cleo mentioned above, it's Family Day here (Ontario). I have the day off, but I don't like it.

What family? I'm not upset at all by it. I'd prefer it to be called something like 'Community Day' like they do in Australia

Ah shoot.

It IS too cold and wet for bocci balls. That is true. MGL is correct, there is no celebration. The other trueness is that the liquor stores are closed and I actually have a neighbor named Bunny. But I'm not going to ask her to spot me a gallon of Jack! I guess that's a win for muddgirl.

I am off, but that's atypical. 4th of July or X-Mas must be on a Wednesday or something, so we won't get an extra day for that this year.
posted by rainbaby 18 February | 11:09
lol, rainbaby!

Here in Greece we celebrate Presidents Day by walking against the light, talking all at once, and drinking lots of coffee.

Working. Not much seems to be closed here today, even garbage collection is normal.

Well, we have classes at my college today, so I will be teaching my two classes today (morning topic: time management; afternoon topic: major purchase decision-making using a decision matrix) while my husband works downstate in his techie nerd job.

Then I will go home and be surprised I didn't get any mail until I remember the post office is closed today.

I am not at work. I guess most of my lab will be in, but mr. g has the day officially off, so we are in Baltimore. both of us, however, are working.
posted by gaspode 18 February | 11:48
Alberta has been observing Presidents' Family Day for almost 20 years. As usual, I'm spending the day as a cat warmer (they seem to have worked out a lapsharing rotation).

Applying for work.

Later, in the evening, I will reward myself by going out and doing something goofy.

and rainbaby, i knew at once that it was cold and wet and that the liquor stores were closed (at 9:58 a.m., at least!)

but i can't believe you have a neighbor named bunny.

I'm "celebrating" it by stressing out. I see the urologist at 11:30 a.m. today. I'll have another CT scan to see if my kidney stone is still hanging around and if it is, I'll be in surgery later today.

I'm at work. With one other person. And some asshole keeps sending loads of ILLiad articles and making me want to hurt things.

Plus we've been struggling with technology all day. First our one printer jammed, and when the technician came out, he fixed it in under 30 seconds. Then our copier needed toner, but the bottle wouldn't fit, so we had to ghetto it up and kinda scoop out the toner, which has led to a giant mess that neither one of us wants to clean up.

Plus I didn't sleep worth a shit last night, so I'm barely awake at the moment.

Working. Thinking about re-reading Vidal's biographical novel Lincoln. Reflecting on how drastically four years of war aged him. Somebody at my neighborhood diner yesterday commented on how much W seems to have aged in the last year. The guy's more of a Repub than I am, so I didn't comment on how late in is coming W's apparent realization that his legacy is going to be Iraq, how he's casting about for something --anything -- else to make him look good (Israel, talking up Africa accomplishments) in retrospect.

Nixon got sort of rehabilitated, although plenty of people are still sore at Ford for pardoning him. There's still a lot of back-and-forth about the Reagan legacy -- he's practically canonized in certain circles -- and I'm wondering what they'll be saying, by the time I'm 60 or so, about W as he enters his own dotage.

The Bees and i are freshly back from the vet (which was thankfully free as she is not only fine but notably well behaved, unless she needs steroids in a week. i made them check her butt glands, anyway) where they had Australian shepherd heeler mixed pups, who were very cute but very noisy once we left the room.
Now we are lounging in the sunlight while i try to sneak a few Vosges truffles without her seeing. One of those horrible chocolate covered cherries is missing and i know she did something to it. I keep checking my shoes. She also was caught having a lick at the rim of some choclated chili the other day, so i'm all disturbed at her cumulative toxic intake.

Maybe i'll make some presidential jello wads.

BoringPostcards is hired for his stone-busting abilities!

Doc said that the stone has most likely passed since I'm no longer in pain. The hospital is supposed to call me with an appointment for a follow up CT scan to confirm, but only the gods know when that'll be.
posted by deborah 18 February | 17:28
YAY Deborah!

Are you sure you need a followup?

With my insurance, it's about $500 out of pocket per scan. Maybe you have a better insurance sitch up there.

YAY YAY YAY Deborah! Praise Jefferson!

Pictures, ethyl, Presidents Day screams for jello.

brina, Bunny is my only true neighbor neighbor, that I could go knock on her door for some reason. She's very nice and right next door. The two crazy things are that if we discuss the local rabbits, I have to be sure to call them rabbits, not bunnies, and that Bunny is short for something that I won't publish, because it's just one of the craziest names ever and probably very stalkable, but it certainly starts with B-U-N. I only know this because of getting her mail by mistake.

Do you know what happens when you take those two fateful steps away from the kitchen area to get the camera set up while the kitty is staring at the presidential jello shots setting?
You get a kitchen that both looks and smells like there's been a drunken murder in toon town.
Oh, yeah, and a kitty cat who does that startled "Oh shit" spasm when you see her in the middle of the bedroom floor, furiously licking herself. i'm afraid someone needs another bath but the fumes keep me from checking it out. i expect her to be drunk, soon to be followed by vomiting, because that's what happens on president's day, right?
Sick animals and cartoon violence?

No, i didn't have a chance to get the camera.
Yes, the presidential jello is in the fridge.
Yes, the kitchen seems both wavy and sticky.
No, i'm not surprised.

*sigh*

Here's yer damn pictures.
Now i'm the one who need a bath.
They'll be ones of jello when i straighten out things tomorrowish.
