I made this soup last night to rave reviews! Here are some adjustments I made.[More:]

I used 2t white pepper rather than 2T. But then I added a little. As it cooks, it seems to lose heat, but 2T would have blown family away.

I also sauteed the ginger and garlic, along with some carrots, bell pepper and tofu, then added the mushroom water and stock.

Did not add enough corn starch to have a LOT of thickening, but it was good none-the-less.

Anyway, there have been many incidences of failed Asian food experiments in my kitchen but this was a good one.

I recommend it. Thanks pups!
Yay! Glad you and the family liked it.

The local food Co-op had kaffir lime leaves in the produce section, so this week's soup experiment is going to be some sort of coconutty-gingery-limey thing.

The hardest thing was explaining to fam. who "mudpuppie" is, as I pasted your recipe into Word and put "mudpuppie's hot and sour soup."

You will have to stop by, next time you are up north, so I can prove you exist.

That sounds so good, mmmm. I love hot and sour and always wondered how to make it myself. And pepper...I love lots and lots of pepper.

Oooh! What about Tom Yum? It supposedly has properties to ward off colds and flus and things, and tastes delicious. It's really easy to make. I linked to a crappy About.com page, but it does have a good recipe. My teenager daughter, who has little to no culinary skills whatsover at this point, has made Tom Yum and it was really good.

Exactly, ico, except none of the recipes I could find had coconut milk in them, and I want coconut milk, dammit!
