18 January 2008

Ah ha! moments of the day. I just figured out that the weird patch of itchiness on my wrist is likely because I was attacked by a mango. [More:] This makes me feel like a wimp, given the general non-threatening nature of mangoes, but at least I feel like a wimp with decent detective skills.

What have you figured out today?
That I forgot to order the biotinylated goat anti-mouse, and have screwed myself and my experiment over. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck.

That I've reached, or almost reached, the tipping point where it doesn't matter to me if the person not carrying their weight gets fired- their stuff will fall to me when they're gone, and it's falling on my desk already, so....

Aw. We probably have some of that antibody here in my lab...but I somehow don't think I can get it to you by trying to cram it in my USB port :(

yeah, we hardly ever use monoclonals.... maybe you could email it to me, divka? :)

that my bosses are even stupider than i previously gave them credit for. when you design a sign to sell mattresses, it's probably not best to write "no more bed bugs."

It's cool...I've got some in my purse. No worries.

Having just rolled out of bed, I guess the closest I've gotten so far is that tea water only gets hot if you turn on the burner under the kettle. Not much of an insight, but it's early.

Better than writing "Continued bed bugs," I suppose.

occhiblu, didn't I read somewhere that mangoes are members of the same family as poison ivy?

my mom breaks out in a rash anywhere near them. I simply don't like the taste.

Yeah, mangoes and poison ivy/oak/sumac all contain urushiol, but I think on mangoes it's mostly on the tree sap and the sticky stuff on the fruit's skin, so most people don't react or come into contact with it. Or something.

I realized that I forgot to renew my prescription, and that I don't have any refills left, so the doctor at the clinic might decline to refill it, which means that I have to fight for a work-in appointment next week, and monday is a holiday, and I've tried before to get a message to the doc, but the receptionists refuse to do it, and I've been on this drug since I was fucking nineteen, and it's not like I'm begging for Vicodin or Oxycontin, so just refill the damn prescription already because I run out on Tuesday!!!

Yeah. I think some people are super-sensitive to them, the skin and leaves and wood especially. I've never had a reaction before (and I love mangoes), but I made a salsa of mango, avocado, red onion, and jalapeno the other night, and I think that some part of the mango skin, juice, or fruit got caught beneath my watchband -- at least, that's where the rash is, and it's itchy rather than burning which I think rules out the jalapeno, and I can't for the life of me think what else could have caused it.

I read once that field workers in mango-heavy areas sometimes mistakenly burn the mango branches they've trimmed, leading to allergic reactions from inhaling the smoke. Can you imagine getting poison ivy in your lungs? Eeesh.

I finally figured out that my ongoing woodstove problems are not due to the stove (duh) or to my fire-lighting technique, or due to the wood sitting in the rain for a day or two before I get around to stacking it, but due to...crappy, insufficiently cured wood. I've had no problems for the last month with firewood from this property. Just bought another cord from my usual wood guy, and it wouldn't burn if you soaked in diesel. Gah. Problem is, there are only a few people who sell the stuff on-island, and it's not like he's gonna take it back, so I'm stuck with it.

*heads off for her third attempt at lighting today's fire, puts on extra socks*

This also explains the record-time buildup of creosote in the stovepipe. *sigh*

I learned that this summer in Hawaii.

An old friend had a mango tree in the yard, but she could not handle them, had to have her daughter skin them, then it was OK.

We took a handful home to the place we were staying, and our hostess insisted that we wash our hands thoroughly, and bag the fruit, as she also was extremely allergic.

I never knew about this. . .

danf, I'm not quite sure how to take that, but it makes me grin either way

That the clothes I didn't get back the last time I sent out laundry are most likely gone for good.

That I prefer my dog's old doggy smell to the new lavender-y smell she came back with from the groomer. Does this make me weird? In my defense, her original doggy smell is really quite lovely, and just what I think dogs should smell like.

I learned this morning that shoes only end up on my feet if I sit down and put them on. Staring at them in blank exhaustion only makes me that much later for work. And yet I had to stare before I remembered what I was supposed to be doing.

Ach, i just had something but then i ate a mango and totally forgot.

My niece, aged four, was diagnosed as allergic to cashews, and her mom was told to keep her away from mangos, as well. And latex. Go figure.

Oh, i realized i should put the magic chef sandwich press back on the free table, because what do i need it for, really? Boosting my pointless use of bread?
