NUTS! [More:]

I don't pick anything out of mixed nuts anymore. Filberts? Fine, bring it. This is a sure sign of ageing.

I don't buy mixed nuts. I'm a peanuts, cashews, and pistachios girl. But apparently, when exposed to mixed nuts, I'll just dive right in now, willy-nilly.

Nuts! What's your nut of choice?
Peanuts, cashews, and almonds are acceptable; hazelnuts must be accompanied by chocolate. You can keep the rest.

My absolute favorite mix is peanuts, almonds, cashews, and those squiggly looking kind that I can never remember the name of, BUT THEY ARE DELICIOUS.

I eat every single type of nut known. My favorites are cashews and brazil nuts, though.

And because it must be done:

I used to be able to name every nut that there was. And it used to drive my mother crazy, because she used to say, "Harlan Pepper, if you don't stop naming nuts," and the joke was that we lived in Pine Nut, and I think that's what put it in my mind at that point. So she would hear me in the other room, and she'd just start yelling. I'd say, "Peanut. Hazelnut. Cashew nut. Macadamia nut." That was the one that would send her into going crazy. She'd say, "Would you stop naming nuts!" And Hubert used to be able to make the sound, he couldn't talk, but he'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut. Pine nut, which is a nut, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut. Red pistachio nut. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut.

I like peanuts less as I get older, unless they're a garnish for some kind of yummy Asian dish. Pistachios, walnuts, and almonds are my current favorites.

Pecans are the best ever, the gold standard of nuts, but they're not as readily available here as they were in Texas. In Texas, you could collect a grocery bag full on the way to the bus stop. Here, you can buy them in the store, but they're not that fresh and they're $16/pound, and something about that just ain't right.

Everything else I'm kind of meh about. I'll eat them, but I don't seek them out.

Oh, and I'm really, really curious about the 'squiggly' nut sperose is referring to. Can't picture it for anything.

gaspode, that's my favorite scene from that movie. Cracks me up every time!

Long time lurker. I just had to get involved in the nut discussion.

Costco carries roasted and salted pecans that are (to my Nebraska pecan sensibilities anyway) quite good. I don't usually like pecans as they are usually rancid in mixed nuts, but these are quite good. Somewhere around $6/lb, which isn't bad at all. Oh, they also carry really fresh-tasting cashews too.

Almost any. I just don't like macadamias and walnuts for some reason. Pistachio, cashews, almonds, filberts are my favorites. Brazil nuts: meh. In a can of mixed nuts, I pick out everything and leave the peanuts. Nuts and chocolate are very good: peanut M&Ms, Hershey's with Almonds, etc.

I stock up on almonds and filberts in the shell during the part of the year they're on sale. I have a few every day.

heh. Me too, Atom Eyes, me too.

FWIW, I am currently addicted to Trader Joe's chili lime peanuts. Deliciousness in a bag!

I love most kinds of nuts.

I much prefer almond flavor to actual almonds, though.

I also much prefer walnuts that haven't been bleached - far more flavor to them.

I like pistachios best, but not the red kind. Other nuts suffice, in order of preference: cashews, almonds, peanuts, deez, walnuts, and filberts. I like nonstandard nut butters as well.

The squiggly nut sounds like maybe a walnut or a pecan.

My favorite nut sweets are baklava and its cousins, pecan pie, and wet walnut cake icing.

Almonds. I am addicted. I like the texture of (toasted) pecans better but in a can of mixed nuts I instinctively end up going for the almonds first. I like hazelnut-"flavored" things (nutella! yay!), but it always seems like half of the actual hazelnuts in every package of mixed nuts are rancid. Also the ones in the center of Ferrero Rochers are always soggy and disappointing.

Peanuts, walnuts and pecans are good; the rest are bleh.

And yes! Best in Show is awesome.

Pistacios are addicting! I can accidentally go through a pound of them. I think it's the whole routine- deshelling, eating, deshelling... I don't eat a pound of them when they're already shelled.

I don't like Brazil nuts. I used to think I did, because you get such a lot of nut all at once, but now I'm more a quality over quantity person and they taste bitter to me.

I like peanuts more and more as I get older.

I eat a lot of non-salted, roasted almonds because they taste really good with bananas, which is my main staple.

gaspode, that was fun to rack my brain trying to recall from whence it came!

I mainly have tiers for nuts.

1st Tier: Almonds, Cashews, Pecans (the top nut often changes)
2nd Tier: Peanuts, non-red pistachios, hazelnuts (if combined with chocolate, or in cooking), and walnuts
3rd Tier: Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts (unless they are in cookies with white chocolate).

Almonds seem to have an interesting flavour combo thing happening with sharp cheddar.

And, for the record, I don't like nut-flavoured anything. Gawd, I wish I could get my mother to stop by hazelnut flavoured coffee. When I visit and that's all there is, it makes me leave the house for regular BLACK coffee.

Oh yeah, I love almonds but I loathe almond-flavored anything. There are few things that make me want to gag, but that flavor is one of them. ugh. marzipan.

Peanuts, honey roasted. Mmmmm.
posted by redvixen 15 January | 20:15
Pretty much all of 'em except red pistachios, hazelnuts and brazil nuts, which I think taste like soap.

Almonds.

And I agree with Hugh: the squigglies are probably pecans or walnuts.

Nuts, for the most part, are gross. I ate myself sick on pistachios when I was a kid, so I think that might be the problem. The only time I really *want* nuts is when I'm drinking at a baseball game.

Pecans.

I hate cashews; macadamias are enh. I like walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, almonds...though I'm with gaspode on nut-flavored things.

I don't eat nuts unless someone stuck in the food I'm eating.

This thread just begs for this.
