Let's talk about my facial hair again! I tried the handlebars. It was fun, but I don't think I can actually live like that. Next up: the chin beard. Also, are goatees now completely out of style?
[More:]
Someone mentioned that goatees are "very Nineties". That hadn't occurred to me, but a few others have agreed. Are they really that far gone?

How do you like the chin beard linked above? Any suggestions for other facial hair configurations I might try?
Yeah, technically a real goatee is just the chin beard, and a goatee + moustache is a Van Dyck, but most people I know think of this as a goatee.

I really like the goatee and the handlebar. I don't like the chin beard. As you have fairly narrow lips with otherwise large features, I think you need a moustache to balance out your face, as othrwise the distance between your nose and upper lip looks too long.

That sounds horribly critical, I'm sorry, it's just objective observation, because you're a good-looking man and I know it doesn't come across like that from the above comment.

Wear the goatee with pride! (Though I'm in a bit of a goatee/peard (pre-beard, but not near beard hybrid phase at the moment)

I don't mind the observation, essexjan, thanks. My wife said something similar. "Your upper lip looks too flat without the moustache!"

I've got nothing against goatees but I've never really mastered the art of beard trimming so I'm either clean shaven or have a Grizzly Adams mountain man beard. Right now I'm full Grizzly mode.

I've never been a fan of goatees in general, but I think yours suits you very nicely.

Yup...stick with the goatee.

Goatee with the mustache. You're in the same boat I am, and what your wife said is dead on.

I don't dislike goatees necessarily, but I do think that once your friend's dad starts growing any style of facial hair, it's no longer "cool".

Having said that, I've had side burns for 20 years and an imperial for about 14. I'm not exactly groundbreaking here.

Oh, I should also say that I do think the goatee looks good on you.

agro, goatees can't *possibly* be "dated" or "very Nineties" if dashing and urbane young gents such as MeCha's own CitrusFreak and my mister are sporting them. Rock the goatee, it's definitely your best look.

anyways after reading this travesty, I'm convinced the fashion police have collectively jumped the shark, so fuck 'em.

Add MuddDude to the list of rockin goatees - he's had a "chin beard" since college, but only recently grew a stash. I love it. (i also like that his facial hair is tri-colored - his hair is blonde, is 'stash is brown, and is beard is red).

Make like a lesbian A-Team cosplayer and van dyke, sir.

My dad had a goatee off-and-on going back to the 1960s, so I can't really think of them as '90s.

Such an outpouring of love for the gentle goatee cannot be ignored! (Also, a pun from cortex.)

Hell no!

Guy Trebay is a twit and a hack.

He did write good stuff for the Voice at one point. But that was back in another century.

See, I've always seen the goatee as just the chin-beard. I called the other thing a goatee-mustache. I usually rock Goat/Burns combo, and I'm figuring I'm stuck with it for life. My nephew who was born in 86 still has the goatee, so... so far it's still kinda hip (then again, we're in the midwest).

I've never been a goatee/mustache combo person, myself.

Ever since the xmas break, though I've been growing a beard. I did have the "Amish Beard" a few years back, which, btw, I've found out is called the chin-curtain beard, or the Donegal Beard. I'm kinda fond of that one :)

Here's an excellent pictorial guide from wikipedia.

However, they don't have my invention, the Fu-Man Chin

I guess I'm the lone dissenting opinion on this...
When I was in film school in the '90's every single nerdy Tarantino worshipper in my class grew that goatee. Like 6 or 7 of them in one class. So I've always sort of hated it. And most of the Barenaked Ladies had it, too, if I recall correctly.
Kind of nerdy but trying to appear edgy. Edgy from the 90's.
Last week we went over to my 44-year old brother's for Christmas and he is growing one now.
It's always just kind of screamed "I give up" to me.

However, you seem to have an ability to pull off various types of facial hair, because it actually doesn't look bad on you.

If I run into the fashion cops again, I will cite this thread as scientific proof that it's okay for me to wear a goatee. SCIENCE!

i'm not a big fan of chin pubes or anyone adopting facial hair to appear "trendy" or "hip," because it ain't ever gonna look right if it doesn't suit you in the first place.
Own it and pull it off, but if you're actually concerned about being "cool" i think i have to go there and smack you upside the head.
