Choose Your Own Title "No, Sorry, Not Any Longer", "It Won't Be the Same Old Lang Syne This Year", "The Living Legacy of the Leader of the Band is Gone", "Hard to Say Anything When You're Dead", "How Can You Make Anything Stay?", "Evicted from the Heart Hotel", "Cancer is Part of the Plan, Dammit"
[More:]
I've had mixed feelings about Dan Fogelberg, considering most of his songs are cheezier than Velveeta, but his early hit "Part of the Plan" was one of pop culture's few messages of hope to the agnostic...

Love when you can
Cry when you have to...
Be who you must
That's a part of the plan
Await your arrival
With simple survival
And one day we'll all understand...

There is no Eden or Heavenly gates
That you're gonna make it to one day
But all of the answers you seek can be found
In the dreams that you dream along the way.
Freaky. We don't sell records at the store, but sometimes when we buy a set of books the sellers will have a few records and leave them behind just to get rid of them. The other day on the bargain cart waiting to be shelved was a Dan Fogelberg LP. Guess Denis Leary will never collect now: "Heavy metal bands are on trial because kids commit suicide...Judas Priest on trial because 'my kid bought the record, and he listened to the lyrics and na na na na na na. Well that's great! That sets a legal precedent! Does that mean I can sue Dan Fogelberg for making me into a pussy in the mid 70's? Is that possible? Huh? Huh? Your honor, between him and James Taylor, I didn't get a blowjob until i was 27 years old!"

Gosh, this time of year, too. Another Auld Lang Syne.

I'm surprisingly bummed about this.

I saw him a handful of times. The last being a few years ago when he made a perfunctory stop in Eugene on a tour. He was supposedly promoting a new CD but only played one song off it, mostly sticking to the "hits." For the one new song, some guy came onstage to play steel drums and was never seen, or introduced, after that song.

He was having a running pissing match with the sound person who worked off to the side of the stage. . .a lot of dirty looks when the canned orchestration was off-cue or missing. Also, Timothy B. Schmidt was the bass player, and he also looked like he could not wait for the tour to end.

But I also saw him a bunch of times in LA and he was on his game, and put on very good shows. A great, under-rated guitar player.

I saw Dan Fogelberg live the night after prom becasue the girl I went to prom with was going with her friends and I think she felt obligated to invite me along. I'm not even sure why I said yes since I didn't like his music - I was into punk and new wave at the time and Dan Fogelerg was sort of the enemy.

But I was surprised at 1) how many of his songs I knew, 2) how many I actully liked, and 3) how good he was. He also was pretty sarcastic and had some very funny stories.

Plus I have a soft spot for him since his greatest hits album was a favorite of my mom and stepdad and they'd sing along. If I hear "Run for the Roses" I still get a warm feeling.

I sort of skipped him. It's a tad rude for me to be a deathbed convert, I think.

strange fogelberg memory - i remembered the flugelhorn solo from "longer" sounding really cool if you play the 45 at 16 rpm. i couldn't find the single, and all of the record players i have that are 16-capable are somewhere in the basement, so i emulated it digitally...

Another Fogelberg memory:

On a solo tour he was on, we went up to Portland and saw him at the Paramount (aka the Schnitz), and apparently, to keep it interesting, his road crew would pick a word, and if he said the word, it would be lowered a la the secret word in Groucho's "You Bet Your Life." Plus, he had to get to a point in the set before they brought him any alcohol. It just seemed like they were having fun, in contrast to the date that I mentioned above.

Also, a very good concert. "Same Old Lang Syne" was unreleased at that point, and he did that, among other new stuff.
