06 December 2007

A lesson I should've learned a long time ago... We were in the booze emporium this evening, having just finished a nice meal with my family. [More:]We'd had Thai food at the best place in Dallas - which is right around the corner from my house - in celebration of my birthday. We ended up at Boozeville because Unicorn on the cob wanted to get some cheap bubbly and I wanted to pick up a six or twelve of Mexican beer.

She found her champagne & some sweet cherry juice to mix it with just as I was discovering the store's 'discount cart' - a shopping cart filled to the brim with single 12 oz bottles of Negra Modelo, Corona, and a few other third world beer treats - and all for $0.75 a bottle. Something told me to back off, that this was too good to be true, that these beers had fallen off the back of a truck, rolled down a mountainside, and ended up at the bottom of an industrial swamp where they'd sat for a good half decade before being discovered, rinsed off, and placed in the discount cart at Centennial Liquors.

Still, the call of seventy-five cents each for beers that I pay full price on a regular basis was just too much for me to handle. I bought 4 Negra Modellos and 4 Coronas, allowing them to cool as Unicorn on the cob and I shared a halfway decent bottle of champagne.

I opened one of the Coronas, took a cautious sip, and gagged like I'd just done a shot of Dick Cheney's morning self-release. Lesson learned. I am hapy to say that I'm on my third of the Negra Modellos and no ill effects, tastewise or other, have been observed. Guess the Corona just went rotten, which makes sense as Corona's a half-rotten beer to begin with. Still... 75 cents...

I'll probably go back tomorrow to pick up the remaining Modelos - and a few Coronas for when 'friends' come over after the bars close at 2 a.m.
1. Age is the enemy of beer.
2. Discount beer is old beer, generally speaking, and the deeper the discount the older the beer.
3. Light is also the enemy of beer.
4. Corona comes in clear bottles, which let in all kinds of light; Negra Modello comes in brown bottles, which let in a lttle light but are the best choice. (Green bottles are slightly better than clear, but not all that much.)

Yeah, I know all of that. I've been a bartender, I've been a serious drinker, I've been all kinds of fun things.

Problem was:

seventy
five
cents
a
bottle

I mean, why the hell not? I only picked up a few Coronas on a whim. I should've gone with all Modelos, I know, and I'll be back.

Yeah, I came off really condescendingly there, didn't I? Sorry about that.

Hey, don't worry about it. Tell you what, why don't you stop on by - I've got some ice cold Coronas that've been asking about you!

Zing!

un-zing - thanks for the apology.

I myself am a liquor/beer/food/taste bud snob and know exactly where you're coming from.

Still, if you want a Corona, I've got 'em cold for you...

Cool.

I'll take a Noche Buena, if you've got it. :)
(Do they even make that anymore? I haven't seen it since 1995 or so.)

THIS THREAD IS USELESS WITHOUT AN ADDRESS for this place you call "Boozeville".

Dude. Corona is shitwater at the best of times.

Sadly, it's the only Mexican beer I can seem to find in the UK. Then again, the kids here drink Buttwiper.

Philistines.

Age is the enemy of beer? This isn't always the case, is it? Because I've got some of this stuff cooling its heels in the liquor cabinet. Should I just drink it right now? Bear in mind that it's 7:14 in the morning.

Chuckdarwin, you need to discover the delights of warm beercask conditioned ale. Also, what happened to Sol? Not that it was any better than Corona.

No, box. That beer is ruined. One to three years in a wooden barrel indeed. Not only ruined, but most likely toxic. Send it to me and I will ensure that it is disposed of safely. No really, it would be no trouble at all.

I first tasted Bohemia in Edinburgh too, now that I think about it. (That is much better than Corona, and probably only Negra from Modelo would come close). It was rather a long time ago, but surely it can be had somewhere "dahn sarf"? (Or even "oop north" which is of course also down south, though they are both distinctly north from here).

It's happy hour in France- drink up!

They still make Sol--here in Arkansas, we get quite a range of Mexican beers (but it's slim pickings, relatively speaking, with European ones). This one's my favorite, but Negra Modelo is much better for the price.

My beer of choice used to be Superior. It's gone now, or at least I have not seen it in years, even down there.

Pacifico is now my choice. I have never liked Corona much.

(derail - I spent a month in Oaxaca with fam. a few years ago. We had found this vegetarian restaurant up on the highway, a few blocks from where I was staying. Down there, when you get off the Zocalo, not much English is spoken. So I am ordering, and for anything other than ordering, getting bus tickets, etc, communication in Spanish is a struggle for me but I work on it. So I am ordering - this is about the 6th meal my daughter and I had had there - and I say "y un XX clara" (green bottle) - and the waiter, from whom I had heard no English at all in the previous visits, while writing on his pad, says in English without looking up "ah, the Mexican Budweiser." You had to be there but it was a hilarious moment.

LOL danf!

Modelo and Negra Modelo are fantastically drinkable. As is Pacifico.

I didn't like Carib at all. It's too bitey and watery, like Stella or Pilsner Urquell. And I'm pretty sure those are widely used beer connoisseur adjectives.

Oh, I love all sorts of beers; I drink a lot of real ale. I also like lager, stout, Belgian white, American microbrews, homebrew (if it's done well). I've been very lucky in that regard. I regularly play music at a CAMRA pub that won the best beer award several years in a row.

I just don't like mass-marketed piss like Corona and Budweiser.

I avoid Miller products, Coors products, Budweiser products, etc.

I like lagers such as Kronenberg 1664 and Staropramen though.

Stella

Ah, wifebeater. What would the UK do without it? (I hate Stella).

Jamie T even wrote a song about it: Sheila
