One of the least likely success stories of the 1960's. [More:] Vanilla Fudge were a buncha guys from Staten Island who creted a brief vogue for sludged up proto-metal covers of Motown and pop numbers. Drummer Carmine Appice went on to work with Jeff Beck and Ted Nugent. Here's their version of the Supremes' You keep Me Hangin' On, Junior Walker's Shotgun, and Donovan's Season Of The Witch.

Believe it or not, tehse guys were huge for a while, and in a weird way they hold up better than a lot of stuff from teh same era.
Deep Purple opened for Vanilla Fudge way, way back when. Later, Purple's guitarist Ritchie Blackmore stated, "Vanilla Fudge said their next album was heavier because of us. But our album was us trying to be Vanilla Fudge."

That "You Keep Me Hangin' On" clip is like all of the 1960s rolled up into a couple minutes of television time... I love it.

They actually had imitators. An outfit called Lexington Ave. Local did a molasses-paced cover of the Association's 'Along Comes Mary,' that sounds just like them.

When you wrote "One of the least likely success stories of the 1960's", I immediately thought of this clip by the Grass Roots, "Let's Live For Today" (lip-synched). Creed Bratton, Creed from "The Office", played lead guitar for them and can be clearly seen at 1:30. The look on his face at 1:50 when he takes the "solo" is priceless.

I'll be damned if their lead singer doesn't look like Commander Riker.

I really couldn't take that Vanilla Fudge video...man, most of that band gave me the creeps, except for the drummer, who could be in my (imaginary) band ANY DAY.

And, mischief, that face was worth the wait!

I probably still have "Vanilla Fudge" on vinyl, stored at my Mom's house. . .

I liked them at first, and then they got a bit repetitive, as far as I remember.
