08 November 2007

oil spill Between the the WWII shipyards, [More:], the dumps, military chemical disposals, the paint factory, etc etc etc the SF Bay animal population was crushed.

I'm out on the water or on the waterfront pretty much every single day. It has been so exciting over the last ~3 years to watch birds come back that I haven't seen since my early childhood. Some birds I'd never seen before ever. Though I wasn't looking for them either.

Pelicans, which disappeared for 20+ years are a positive nuisance now. It's wonderful!

And now this. It's heartbreaking.
Did you ever find out anymore about volunteering for the cleanup, s_r?

(If you hear something, please let me know. I think I'll be down there this weekend and could donate a couple hours.)

Actually, that metatalk thread has a bit. Mostly sites for signing on to n000b volunteers lists. Apparently it'll be a couple days before they'd be able to use grunts. I signed up.

My first thought was "Some harbor pilot's gonna get his head handed to him and get set on the beach." My second was "WTF? What ever happened to nav radars? Surely they'd manage not to lose the Bay Bridge in the surface return?"
