I'm a bad father [More:]I just gave my kids toasted cheese sandwiches for dinner and made them a spider for dessert.

But then, I figured there was wheat in the bread, dairy in the cheese and, with the on-going dispute as to whether the tomato is a vegetable or a fruit, the tomato sauce counts as one serve of both vegetables and fruit. More dairy in the icecream and the green softdrink satisfies the "eat your greens" command. Right? That's not so bad, is it?

Like how the wedge of lime in the top of a Corona counts as one of your five-a-day.

You're not a bad father, you're just training their bodies to deal with the survival-level eating they'll go through at college at some point.

^ exactly!

What chrismear said, and plus some of my favorite food-memories as a child involved toasted/grilled cheese sandwiches (especially with tomatoe soup) in cold weather. Bad father my left foot.

Think of it as being a temporary, stand-in uncle for the day. Being a bad father* is when jaffles and spiders are the norm for tea.

*My inner eight year old says that "bad"="awesome" here.

You clearly need to listen to Bill Cosby's routine on "Chocolate Cake for Breakfast".

That's what I thought, TPS.

You're only a bad father if you forget to feed the kids, or give them gummy bears or popcorn. My husband has been known to feed them: nothing, an apple, a yogurt, popcorn, or gummy bears for breakfast or lunch. Don't be so hard on yourself. The goal is to keep them alive. If they're still breathing, you're doing well.

Ooooh. Same here. My dad always made us grilled cheese and tomato soup for Saturday lunch. It's still one of my comfort foods.

Oh, I loooove Bill Cosby: Himself. That dude was so funny back in the day.

*grooves*

"Dad is great!"

*grooves*

"Gives us chocolate cake!"

Dude...my child is eating cheerios off the floor. Cheerios I scattered on the floor on purpose. (What? They're whole grain and it's good for his fine motor skills!) You've got nothing to be concerned about.

i ate Apple Jacks off the floor. It was my sister's idea.
i believe the game was called Cow.
It did not damage me as much as the rest of my childhood.

Tomato soup and grilled cheese sammiches are the most awesomest of comfort food. Funny how they are for so many people.

By the way - why are floats called "spiders" in Oz? Float I get - ice cream floating in liquid. Spider doesn't compute.

And, if IIRC correctly, that although the tomato is technically a fruit because the way it grows, it is legally a vegetable in the U.S. for some reason I can't remember.

Ronald Reagan. Ketchup counts as a vegetable under the funding requirements for school food programs.

Mmmmmm!!! Toasted cheese sandwiches! My mom sometimes abused us that way, thank gods.

Before reading all the way through, I thought you were calling yourself a bad father for serving an acutal spider to your children by accident. Compared to that, grilled cheese and tomato soup are the cat's pajamas.

heh, my son still recalls fondly the day I just said the hell with it and made him chocolate chip pancakes with syrup and coke to drink for breakfast. He has never been so happy, before or since.

See, I'm always causing trouble at my place because I refuse to give the kids this sort of food... my wife sometimes will (as a 'treat') but I always kick up a huge fuss.

I'll go to my grave saying "You can't serve pancakes with chocolate spread for breakfast and PB&J for lunch!"

Yeah, mine too - more evidence that those who are abused as children go on to become abusers themselves.
