Dakou ("Saw Gash") CDs are shipped to China to be dumped in landfill sites. As you might expect, they don't always make it to the tip.
[More:]
When the government controls what western goods and ideas can be imported, subversive or even interesting music often stops at the border. But tapes which have been cut to prevent playing can be spliced back together; CDs with nicks out of their edge will still play most of the tracks. So dakou becomes a potent source of otherwise forbidden music. The suits of the music industry most likely see this as straight piracy, but others claim it is something more subtle.

Dakou has been credited with kickstarting the Beijing punk scene, but many punks have moved on to make genre bending music that reflects the mishmash of influences dakou brought.

"Millionaire" Peng Lei talks about the influence of dakou. The early influence on his band, New Pants, of the Ramones is far from subtle, even in their curious brand of synth-pop.

Sha Zhou, a young Quingdao rapper, explains how he went from listening to dakou copies of the Back Street Boys to real rap.

I think MetaChat deserves good posts, too, and this is excellent. Thanks, Gecko!

Thanks guys. I'm not actually a Mefite, so it's a Mecha exclusive, I'm afraid. (I can't think of a way to agree with BP without sounding conceited though, heh). Having seen New Pants supporting Regurgitator last night (Sunday), I was blown away. Initially I thought about posting some YouTube or MP3 goodness, but my Googling led me to the story of dakou.

Great post! Very cool how things find their way regardless of the system. I love stumbling on gold like that, gecko!

Very cool. RE: Mefi - I'll spring for your $5 if you promise to share more in the future.

Great post! If I didn't already have too many projects, I'd start up a music blog called "Saw Gash." (Dakou.com appears to be a site where you can buy such discs, but it's all in Chinese so I can't be sure.)

The "far from subtle" link led me down a delightful chain of New Pants videos and made my night. And Brain Failure fucking rocks. This is great stuff.

Thanks for the generous offer, typewriter, but it seems as though fate is herding me towards signing up in the next few days anyway. The biggest practical hurdle was always the paypal account*, and that may well be taken care of tomorrow. The thought is very much appreciated though.

*Well, that and the snark. And the imminent death of MeFi brought on by people with a higher user number than mine. And cortex's cutting reasons for deletion. And the confusing number of buttons for flagging and moving on, and so forth. And the fact that not having an account is probably the only real prophylactic against having too many martinis and flaming out in the grey. And the lack of anything decent to post about. But mostly it was paypal.

Oh, GeckoDundee; metafilter needs you! That was a gorgeous, gorgeous post, and the reason metafilter exists - to host posts like that. I hope you join and post it, and many more like it. (Not that we aren't absolutely joyful that you posted it here, but it deserves a more prominent platform.)
