AUUUUUGHH! [More:]Just cross-posting this here for any bunnies that don't read AxMe yet might have advice.

I'm just flabbergasted. That my old friend would have done this, and that the collection agencies involved have pursued the debt without officially reporting it to the credit reporting agencies, for fifteen years.
Surely, there's some sort of oversight mechanism in place. Someone you can write to.

The FTC? I'm at a loss. Credit and credit reporting is a racket, imho, but I'm aware that it's necessary. However you're treated as guilty until you prove yourself innocent. Sigh.

Good lord. That's just not right, on so many levels.

SO many levels. Consider that this debt has never been reported, is *at least* fifteen years old (from the little information they'll give me on the phone, still have received nothing in writing) and that the statute of limitations in the three states in the USA in which I've had resident is four years, which is a very far cry from fifteen.

I feel like I'm being stalked, a little.

WolfDaddy I posted over there, too, but get your hands on a copy of this book: Stop It: A consumer's Guide to Effectively Stopping Collection Agency Harassment. I've used it, friends of mine have used it. It works to get the collection assholery off your back so you can figure out what your options are.

Thank you chewie dear. :-) Why is the book being offered for a penny + s&h, any ideas??

I first learned of the book in the early 90's - it's actually out of print. My sister and I both used the instructions in it within the last year and it still worked!

I also think it's amusing that one of the authors is listed as Benjamin Dover. HA!
