Hey, it's that guy! Just watched a filming of Ridley Scott's Body of Lies, starring Russell Crowe and Leonardo Dicaprio, which is taking place near my job, and in a place near and dear to my heart. I didn't see either of the stars, but I did see that old guy...[More:]You know the one, that guy that always plays old guys, and he was in that one movie, you know, where he was the grizzled but kindly old guy? Who is that guy?
Wilford Brimley?

Grizzled but kindly old guy...heehee.

Yeah probably Wilford Brimley. Maybe Brian Dennehy, but he plays grizzled but unkindly guys sometimes, so maybe not.

Morgan Freeman?
posted by Hugh Janus 05 September | 12:32
Less grizzled than Brimley or Dennehey, (much) less black than Freeman. Seems like I remember him in a lot of 80s-era movies. He has to be 90, but, then again, he's always played "old."
posted by mrmoonpie 05 September | 12:36
Oh, so he's only semi-grizzled? Is he skinny, heavy, tall, small?
posted by iconomy 05 September | 12:38
Shortish, heavyish, scruffy beard. Very friendly face. I could see him playing a leprechaun or Irish uncle or something.
posted by mrmoonpie 05 September | 12:42
Is it Ernest Borgnine? Er I'm not sure he's still alive, and if he's not alive, I can pretty much guarantee that it's not him.
posted by iconomy 05 September | 12:44
Not Ernest Borgnine.
posted by mrmoonpie 05 September | 12:47
Argh. This is going to drive me nuts. Has he always had a beard? It's not the guy who played Paulie in the Rocky movies, is it?
posted by iconomy 05 September | 12:52
Not Paulie. Dunno if he's always bearded, though I could totally see him as Santa.
posted by mrmoonpie 05 September | 12:57
Aw yeah, I love Burt Young!

Richard Farnsworth?

Richard Farnsworth? Nope, he's dead.
posted by mrmoonpie 05 September | 13:02
He's shuffled off, taz.

Why is no other cast credited in this thing? Wierd.

I was just searching IMDB, turning up this and that, when I came upon this MPAA rating for some flick or other:

Rated R for a crude sexual remark.

Musta been hella crude, huh?

Back to the search.
posted by Hugh Janus 05 September | 13:03
Just don't annoy the Crowester. He'll toss a cell phone at you with the highest of velocities.
posted by psho 05 September | 13:34
Damn. Isn't there a website devoted to hot, grizzled but kindly old guys? There should be.

HughJ - I googled 'Rated R for a crude sexual remark', and almost every return was for a movie called Off the Black. In the forum there everyone pretty much agrees that it's a PG13 movie and they discuss the weird rating. Someone says that the crude remark used is 'suck my cock'.

Which makes you hope none of the ratings board members ever visit MetaTalk, what with all the skullfucking and the endless buckets of cocks.

So the actor. Could it be that guy with the lazy eye? His last name is Egan, I think...? In my mind all the old guys I know are starting to merge into one kindly but grizzled hairy face.
posted by iconomy 05 September | 13:39
Nevermind - it was Jack Elam and it seems he's dead too.
posted by iconomy 05 September | 13:43
Nope, not the lazy-eye guy. It'll come to me tonight, as I'm fallng asleep, then I'll forget it again upon awakening.
posted by mrmoonpie 05 September | 13:43
Ed Asner. Brendan Gleeson. Grampa Walton Dude.
posted by rainbaby 05 September | 13:46
Nope, nope, and nope.

There is. It's called flickr.

*runs quickly out of the room*

Isn't there kindly, grizzled old guy named Jesse or Jessie Somebody?
posted by taz 05 September | 13:55
Maybe I'm thinking of Joss Ackland... hm.
posted by taz 05 September | 14:03
Hah, danf! I said OLD. We're talking 90s.

(you are hot but not old enough...sorry. Come back in 40 or so years ;P)

Oh! It could be him, taz. He looks grizzled yet kindly! Not *too* kindly, and not *too* grizzled. Beard? Check. Could play a leprechaun? Check. Friendly face? Check.

Joss Ackland played Arjen Rudd in Lethal Weapon II, and though he wasn't in the following scene, I think it my duty to remind everyone of such high comedy:

[At the South African Consulate]
Roger Murtaugh: How you doin'?
[his handshake is ignored by the Envoy]
Consulate Envoy: I think there must be some mistake.
Roger Murtaugh: Say what?
Consulate Envoy: Listen to your friend here, he knows what he's talking about. I don't think you want to go to South Africa.
Roger Murtaugh: Why not?
Consulate Envoy: Because you're black!
Leo Getz: [to Murtaugh] You are.
[to Envoy]
Leo Getz: He is.

Not Joss Ackland, but you're getting close. taz, I believe you're thinking of Jesse White. Also not the guy. I do appreciate everyone's enthusiasm.

On a related note, I just found out they'll be blowing up a car at the movie shoot tonight. I saw several burned-out prop cars earlier, so I suppose I'm not surprised. I'm damned glad they gave us a warning, though.
posted by mrmoonpie 05 September | 17:37
Well, I don't want to scare you or anything mrmoonpie, but if you don't come back here and tell us when you figure it out, I'm afraid there will be lots of furry little creatures with sharp teeth sent out to look for your blood. Yep.

Don't even bother to update this thread, because we may forget to check. Go ahead and make a new post. I hope you sleep well in the interim, because you'll need all your strength to fight off savage vampire zombie bunnies. If it comes to that.
posted by taz 05 September | 17:44
danf, you crack me up.

yes, mrmoonpie, please, an update. I'm going to be googling grizzled but kindly old guys later tonight.

And no, "googling" is not a euphemism.
posted by iconomy 05 September | 18:05
Actually, a grizzled but (possibly) kindly old guy hit on me just today. True story.
posted by taz 05 September | 18:16
oh! Forgot to add - no, I didn't "google" him.

Are you going to be able to see filming today? Take a camera and shoot the old guy!
posted by iconomy 06 September | 09:08
Your That Guy --- is he one of These Guys?
posted by Elsa 06 September | 11:40
None of those guys, Elsa. I went down to the movie site just now, and it looked like they were cleaning up today. I'll figure it out one day!
posted by mrmoonpie 06 September | 12:17
Grrr. Two more thoughts.

1. Michael Gough - the guy who played Alfred in the Batman movies.

2. Ridley Scott, the director of the movie. He's old, Irish, and has a beard.

HOLY CRAP I FOUND HIM!!! I FOUND HIM!

Holy crap!

Robert Prosky!! Robert F'ing Prosky!

Oh, that guy!
posted by Elsa 06 September | 12:32
How did you find him??
posted by iconomy 06 September | 12:34
iconomy, after trying every google I could think of, I just started flipping through imdb pages, trying to think of movies he might be in. For some reason, I was led to The Natural--weren't there a bunch of old guys in that one? Brimley and Farnsworth, yup, they were there. Prosky's not pictured on the credits list, though, so I almost overlooked him. I was really just trying every name on the list that seemed possible. them, BOOM! EUREKA! ROBERT PROSKY!
