Nomic exploratory committee formed. Just now. By me. Right here. I'm working on an idea—this idea, specifically—and am looking for feedback and interested parties.[More:]
If you don't know what Nomic is, it is, briefly, a game of self-modification: proposing (and arguing and voting on) changes to the rules themselves is the game. For way, way, more info, see my recent post on mefi (which is what got me thinking about this in the first place).

If you're interested in the idea, give the ruleset document a read and let me know what you think: is anything egregiously missing? Wrong? What do you think would be needed for a proper starting point, based on this?

If you'd be interested in actually having a go at a game some time soon, cool; I'd want to do some organizing and make sure we have at least a half-dozen folks capable of being fairly dedicated to a game, and if that comes together, faboo. I may make a Metatalk post at some point in the future to get more Mefi eyeballs on ti as well, if the draft here shapes up to be pretty workable.

Nerd powers go!

Ooo! We played a game here once that might (?) be called Nomic (or a nomic?). I *think* it was started by Hugh Janus, but I'm not sure. It started out with no one being able to use the letter E in their comment, and then other rules were added, like no periods or certain words or other letters. It was a blast. The farther down the comments got, the funnier the rules became and eventually you could hardly type anything. I can't think of how to search for it. Would someone please remember what the hell I'm talking about and find it so I can see if it's Nomic or not?

Dammit, why can't I 'favorite' comments here?

Oh and what would the forum for playing be? A chat room? IRC? Blog? Smoke signals?

This would be crazy amounts of nerdly fun.

Actual playground would probably be email list plus a state-tracking site maintained by someone (where someone almost certainly means 'cortex' in this case). Wouldn't really work to arbitrate it in a thread (too flat) or in IRC (too crazy and temporal).

I want to play.

This is what I was thinking of: Particle Cannon.

I'm in, but I'm too busy today to read up and follow through. I'll check back when I get back from my trip.

I would play, but only if post id #1 reads "First post!!!1" or similar nonsense.

Alternatively, my first proposal will be to alter the Rules such that the first comment in each thread reads "first!" or similar.

No not really. But yes put me down as interested.

Particle Cannon was a great read.

Oooh I liked Particle Cannon Game. Especially when I outlawed my username and started using my sockpuppet to play.
posted by Hugh Janus 10 September | 13:29
I'm not your sockpuppet, you big asshole.

That's convincing.
posted by Hugh Janus 10 September | 13:31
Heh.

Not forgotten, just not going to move on this until I know that (a) I know how to pull it off and (b) I've got the free time and attention span to actually make it happen.
