Shark attacks surfer what makes this short article cool: the victim "tried to fight the shark before being pulled to shore by fellow surfers." →[More:]
Go, fellow surfers! I hope I'm that brave.
It's very sharky around there. . .I have never seen a great white, but I also believe that we (surfers) look like seals to them, and that is why they usually bite once or twice and (if we survive) realize their "oops" and move on.
Tiger sharks in Hawaii, though, another story. . .they seem to like manflesh (and womanflesh, likely).
Fighting it was probably the best thing he could do. Trying to run/swim away would probably get you dead that little bit faster. Of course I am probably talking out of my ass, no first hand knowledge, not many shark attacks in Michigan. Though you don't want to fuck with a Muskellunge, it might bite a finger off.

Probably the only thing you could do, given that it is his home, he's evolved to hunt prey in that aquatic environment and hence, can move much faster than any clumsy, bipedal land mammal with a big-ass board attached to its ankle.
Please don't read any machismo into this statement; the first thing I'd do upon spotting a shark, assuming that I had had the luxury of seeing him first, would be to get the fuck out of the water.
