Poise comes in many forms. Sometimes it's making that right comment in an uncomfortable situation. Sometimes it's stepping blithely out of your panties when the elastic gives out on a crowded sidewalk. And sometimes,[More:]sometimes, it's being 30' up a ladder on a windy day, painting around high tension lines, singing 'I am the very model of a modern major general'. And for you? What is your best moment of poise?
Oooh, this is a toughy. I have almost completely abandoned the possibility of poise. I once worked at a youth camp and ran the black powder rifle shoot. There was a hat on a stick about a 100 yards away. After demonstrating how to load the rifles, I said, "and then you aim and shoot." Bam! The hat went flying in the air and I acted like that happened every time.

I caught a fly in midair in my very first job interview and nonchalantly added that I also possessed beginning Jedi skills. I got hired.

I won a game of snooker against a British guy in 1994... I still remember it like it was in a movie. I had only played snooker a few times & this guy was being all arrogant, trying to distract me & stuff. He acted like his entire status as a man was at stake because I -- a WOMAN! GASP! -- was tied in the game with him. We were in Thailand & finally, right on my last shot (which looked impossible) he threw a bunch of Thai baht (money) onto the pool table yelling that if I won he'd give it to me. Somehow I was able to ignore him and hit the ball... which rolled right past the money and... I won the game! It was so great.

I've never made a shot like that since. It was an amazing moment... and there were about 30 people watching, which didn't help the guy's ego.

Finishing a song even though there's been a serious technical hitch - broken string, dead mic, dead amp, dead PA... whatever.

I once saw radiohead at Lakewood high school auditorium (on the OK Computer tour). Thom Yorke played all of Exit Music even through a power cut. In the pitch dark, he stood there, clearly audible, playing guitar and singing for an entire verse and chorus.

In the end, everything came back up and the band kicked in together (it was rather effortless). As all the roadies scrambled around to get every setting on 1000 pieces of electronic gear back to where they should be, Thom asked "where's my goddamn drink?"

The first time I was passed the ball in my first ever basketball game in high school gym class, no one was near me just off the top of the key. I took the shot. Swoosh! Not even a bit of rim.
