Okay, so here's the review! Wing's show at Cafe du Nord was actually... I'm shocked to say it... GREAT. A few HUNDRED happy people showed up!
→[More:]It was honestly one of the most fun nights I've ever had in San Francisco. I dragged 2 friends along who knew nothing about her, and by the end of the night we were all arm in arm & singing Dancing Queen offkey together. She was absolutely adorable and has everything memorized to the note in such a way that if you have heard her CDs, she sounds EXACTLY the same. Which, if you have a fondness for Wing, is amazing. And when she thanked me from the stage, I just kinda melted, actually. When I was finally introduced to her, she just glowed and grasped my hand so tightly in both of her hands, it just made me feel so good. It was clearly one of the best nights of her life and I felt really good that I helped to make that happen. They were selling my posters for her to autograph and they sold out!!!
The entire show turned out so much better than I'd expected. And as for the crowd? Honestly I've never seen so much unconditional love for a performer in my life. People were practically crying, she was so adorable and inspiring. I mean, it takes guts to get onstage and here's this tiny little bird of a woman coming to America alone and belting out the songs she loves, just because she loves it. It really does make you wonder about your own fears and why you don't conquer them like she does. The day before the show she had a panic attack, but she still got up there and rocked the crowd. And WOW did they love her.
Here's a review of the show that appeared on Songbirds, a singer's newsgroup:
"I had to wait a day before I reported back because I was just too excited to post.
Wing soared. Cafe du Nord is a basement facility with few chairs. When we got there, there were maybe 30 people there, but the place quickly filled up. I am no good at estimating crowds, but I believe there were about 200 Wing fans there. Everyone pushed to the front when she started. Luckily I was right in front so I could get good pictures; however, I am sorry to say I did not tape Wing's first appearance in the United States.
She's the real thing. She really does hit those notes. My favorite part was when everyone was clapping along with the beat, Wing was clapping as well, but totally off the beat. Maybe that is her idea of syncopation, I don't know. She did all of her favorites including I Want to Hold Your Hand which was a crowd pleaser especially when she hit that note. For those of you who are Wing fans, you know that note. Although I can't say this is the definitive performance, it certainly is Wing's definitive performance. She also did In the Ghetto, Close to You, and a song from the Sound of Mucus which was also a highlight. She did 11 songs and one encore because the crowd just wouldn't let her go. The crowd loved her and many were heard to scream out, "We love you Wing".
I am glad I was there for this history making performance. I do hope she is booked into a New York club."
