Canada takes better care of their mullet-rockers than the US. [More:]When I was 17, I went on a family vacation to Quebec City. After a family dinner, I roamed around the city and wound up in this rock and roll/biker bar. On the TV they played the usual suspects: AC/DC, Kiss, Metallica and everybody bobbed their heads politely, but when native 'Nucks Triumph came on, the place went apeshit. I told this to a Toronto raised friend and he said "Oh yeah [Triumph guitarist/vocalist] Rik Emmett never has to buy his own drinks again."

This of course warmed my rockin' cockles, so grab a Molson, put on your toques and put your fist in the air for some 'Nuck Rock.

Triumph
Lay It On The Line
Magic Power

April Wine
Sign Of The Gypsy Queen
Just Between You And Me

Saga
On The Loose

Rush
Working Man
Limelight

and for the finale..

Bob & Doug MacKenzie
Take Off

Take off, eh?

Oh, and for you non-Canucks, it is true that 12 American beers = 42 metric beers.

...and 1 lb. of bacon = 32 kilos of back bacon.

Plus, you guys get the cool-looking money. Although a pocketful of loonies and toonies can get a bit heavy after awhile.

Could they be used to, say, fend off polar bears? Maybe in an old unmatched sock?

Who is the most famous Canadian of all time?

Jim Carrey?
Neil Young?
Avril Lavigne?
Pamela Anderson?
Keanu Reeves?
Celine Dion?
Alanis Morissette?
Bryan Adams?

(full disclosure: I am often - I mean, like, really, really often - mistaken for a Canadian. Americans are so roundly disliked that it would be impolite to automatically believe that I'm a Yank. Sad commentary, isn't it?)

ORLY? I'm usually mistaken for British or German. I wonder if that means everyone is just being polite. Heh.

People in France and Germany sometimes think I'm Australian when I speak English; in the south of France, people think I'm from the north of France when I speak French (northern French people can tell I'm English); in Germany, people think I'm French when I speak German.

altolinguistic, your handle really suits you! Just how many languages do you speak fluently?

(my French is crap, my German nonexistent)

just the two apart from English, cd: my French is kinda sorta native-like, from a distance and with a following wind (and I fool people from the South of France regularly) and my German is pretty crap but I have reasonable fluency and can understand most things.

Having these languages, and a fair grasp of general linguistics, means that I can read newspapers slowly in most places from Sweden to Portugal, which is pretty cool. And I did a little bit of Russian, way back when, so can decipher Cyrillic even though I can't understand much.

I can't access Metafilter for some reason but there was a recent thread on AskMe about 'celebrities who speak other languages' in which Dee Xtrovert put me and most other people to shame in this department!
