Today you get three wishes. Because I luff you. [More:]

This is totally inspired by Teeps' dream, because my first wish is for a

1. Magic wand. This would be for finding stuff, fixing stuff, cleaning stuff, making stuff. (Remember that scene in Sleeping Beauty where Flora, Fauna and Merriweather used their wands to make a dress, a cake, and clean the cabin? Yeah.) I don't think it would be able to make things out of thin air, though. Like, if you wanted mashed potatoes, you'd have to actually have the potatoes. But you could just wave the wand over the raw potatoes and poof! They're done. Or maybe, if all you had was beets, you could change them into potatoes... Sure, okay. Is your tub all grimy? Poof! Neighbor kid broke his arm? Poof! Lost your favorite rock? Poof!

2. A wallet that, every time you opened it, had a twenty dollar bill in it.

3. I was going to say for my grandfather's broken pelvis to heal quickly, but I've got the magic wand, eh? (Poof!) So, world peace and stuff.

What do you want?
1. To be able to teleport myself and stuff instantly anywhere.
2. To be in perfect health forever.
3. To be able to give people what they need when they need it, be it a cookie or a slap in the face.

Next time i'll think first and type later.

1. A 24/7 personal chef, who does all my cooking/food shopping.
2. A big house, where I can have lots of doggies.
3. A personal shopper, to buy, tailor, and maintain a fabulous wardrobe for me.

1. Debt erased
2. A solid guarantee I will never hear from my ex again
3. More self-control over the things that hurt me and others

1. A fondue pot
2. Some trees and landscaping for my yard
3. Someone to tell me where the filter for my air conditioner is, so I can change it.

Ah, see, I wish for simple things, because I know that complex things are always screwed up (ref., the X-Files and any other story involving wishes, except for Disney's Aladdin)

1) The ability to heal people of their illnesses and dysfunctions magically and instantly.

2) A magic-eight ball that really worked.

3) And I think I ditto ethylene's teleporter, one that I could use to bring other people along with me. Man, I so need one of those.

1. Laundry service. I would love for someone to do all of my laundry. Fold, press, and hang. Oh My God.

2. My kids to have a productive, enjoyable school year. School career for that matter. So far, so good.

3. More balance. (Doesn't that sound cliche?) I usually go hog-wild on one hobby or activity and forget everything else. I'd like to be harmoniously involved in my three top three hobbies simultaneously without the house going to hell, or dropping exercise.

1. Teleporter. pure genius.

2. cute tattoo artist boy calling me up all "I totally dig you."

3. piles of money that never runs out

1) motivation to get my work done
2) a clean apartment
3) a Sane-erizer for myself and friends, for when we're going off the deep end.

1. The job I'm interviewing for on Thursday.
*pockets other 2*

1. For me to be able to use the online hold system at my local library here in California but pick up the books at my local library in Latvia.
2. For everyone in my family applying to college to get in, with a full ride and nice place to live.
3. A wallet-sized machine that could produce steaming hot gyoza whenever I wanted.

I can manage from there.

totally. There was a book called Stone 588, where a diamond had curative power. Not that great a book, but the idea of the stone has stuck with me.

2. For my son to find a job.

3. A nice man in my life would be very pleasant. If he's nice-looking, too, I'd be okay with that.

World peace, end to hunger, justice for all, too, of course. But Specklet's got that covered.

Cloak of Invisibility would be mad fun.

I really like this thread, but I'll stop now.

Ever since I read The Lathe of Heaven I wig out thinking about unintended consequences of wishes.

1) cucumber salad (see shouting thread for details)

2) nth the teleporter idea

3) ethylene's night bus delivery service

See, I'm already building a teleporter. I'll just use my wand to finish it, and I'm off!

I like you people who are nice and wish to be able to help other people.
posted by Specklet 21 August | 17:28
I wish I could help myself to other people.

Help yourself, toots.
*does suggestive eyebrow thing*

The Lathe Of heaven and many other instances make me an experienced wisher. The last one is the only one i would stick to, because what someone needs is not usually anything like what someone things they want. Doesn't mean they don't need it.
i advise against blanket wishes like world peace and healing.
Also, not everyone should have their problems solved. Consequences should be dealt with, just some of the uglier aspects of life could be rounded off at the edges if the lesson is learned.

various wishes derived from my various recurrent dreams:
1) a trip through the labyrinthine coed locker/shower rooms
2) spend some time with my pet ferrets that could talk
3) fly (isn't that everyone's wish?), but without the falling part
and I'll do well enough without the arrays of clogged public toilets, thank you.

this technique should be utilized more often.

1. I wish for all this to end.
I don't really need the other two now, do I?

1. That the hassles with my place will stop.
2. That I will lose 60 pounds.
3. That I will fall asleep being held New Year's Eve.

Since the rest of y'all have pretty well cover the altruistic stuff, I will attend to my own modest needs:

1. A self-replenishing bottle of Bulleit Bourbon.
2. A good night's sleep.
3. Bacon with breakfast in the morning.

Wishes are dangerous. Given wishes that actually work, I would (I'm afraid) wish for pretty much unlimited power:

1. To be able to strongly influence world opinion on any subject: environmental, religious extremism, genocidal regimes, torture, foreign policy, etc.

2. To end the financial inequalities in the world.

3. To end the world's most pervasive fatal diseases.

posted by chuckdarwin 22 August | 05:17
Heh. Chuck is right, as all the cartoons and fairy tales keep telling us: Wishes are dangerous.

I keep trying to come up with the bulletproof wish... Like "I wish to be totally happy" knowing that this would take care of all my money/security, self actualization, and love needs, plus world hunger, violence, disease, etc., because one can never be totally happy knowing others are in horrible situations.

But then, I figure I'll wake up with a frontal lobotomy and a cookie, and be delighted.
