I love AskMe. [More:]Honestly, how else would I have possibly been able to identify some French guy I met in the desert? I had totally given up that I would never have a 100% positive ID & walked away from the thread thinking, "Well, maybe it was this guy. But I dunno. I give up." And then this morning I got an e-mail asking me to look at the last comment. And voila! It's my snooty French actor!

I'm so happy someone figured out who the guy is! I'm just amazed.

AskMe is such an incredible resource, you know? It just kills me. I remember one time when someone asked where they could buy "Pocari Sweat" in Washington DC and the response was something like, "Go to B&R market on the corner of X & X Streets, it has a blue awning. When you go in, make a right turn immediately after the toilet paper. There's a cooler on the left, hidden in the corner. It's $1.50 a bottle. They have three left right now but they're restocking on Thursday."
The precision of the some of the answers on AskMe, sometimes in response to what appear (to me) to be the obscurest of questions, never ceases to amaze me.

And, call me pathetic, but I still get a buzz whenever I get a 'best answer' tick next to my inane scribblings.

I probably delete three AskMe answers for every one I post. Repeat: I do not know everything. I do not know everything ...

When our dishwasher flooded onto our hardwood floors last week, the first thing I did (well, first thing after mopping up the water) was to fire up AskMe. On other occasions, it's saved me hundreds on home repairs. AskMe was directly responsible for my awesome 40th-birthday trip, and has aided other trips, as well ("go to the left" is now a common expression in our house).

It has failed me, though. I never have gotten a good answer to this one.

I like to think I've made some good contributions, too. This is my favorite.

Oh, I liked this one, too, since I actually was going to that party, and this one, since I attended the college he was agitatin'.

One more, and I swear I'll stop. I'd never heard of tonsil stones before this thread, then I discovered that I had them. Thanks, AskMetafilter!

Before AskMe, I had never heard of "night terrors." I woke up having one years ago but just thought I was crazy and that I couldn't tell anyone. So that was amazing... to read someone else describe having one and realize it's a weird-ass thing that happens to people. And not uncommon at all!

And when I wrote about my tinnitis, it really helped me too. Honestly, AskMe has just been so helpful. You always know that somewhere out there some Mefite is probably an expert on whatever it is you're trying to figure out. And if nobody knows what to tell you, then that's a good thing to... it's a message that maybe you need to not worry about something.

It also makes me feel good to be able to pass on what I learned from having a fucked up childhood/family. I really like being able to turn negative experiences into something positive that might help other people. Makes me feel good. :)

I love AskMe, too. Sometimes I send my friends links to AskMe's. They always love them.

Oh, fuck all of y'all. I was the one who posted the first best answer, and then -- just because somebody got it a little bit righter -- you bitch, miss lynnster, you took away my best answer.

I treasure those damn checkmarks. WAAAAHHHHHH!

P.S. Glad you got your answer.

I'm sorry! But... but... IT WAS HIM!!!!!

I tell you what... as a compromise I'll go back and favorite you. Okay?

Oh great -- a pity "favorite."

* sniffs, then brightens up * OK, thanks!

I have not had much success with AskMe, but agree that it is an awesome resource.

AskMe helped me sell my car for thousands more than I would have otherwise, discover what part of my computer's tower was making the motorboat noise, find elusive items like ringbound index cards from a tiny company in Wisconsin and a quality shortwave radio in Singapore, pick out an awesome restaurant in Mexico City, learn why Indonesian Dunkin Donuts have to be labeled halal, and helped me move to Krakow and start my career. And I've loved giving back, especially here.
