Wow. I just kind of fired someone and it went fine. [More:]

He was just a contractor and we'd been phasing him out anyway, but I was nervous. My boss has been giving me more responsibility lately, and it came down to me to officially let the guy go.

He was fine with it.

*whew*
Phew. Having to fire someone always made my stomach churn with anxiety (except that one time when i was quite sanguine, but that worker soooooo needed to be fired).

That's great that it went smoothly: good for you, good for the company, and doubtless less stressful for the contractor, ultimately.

So Specklet, I take it that you feel like you are on more solid ground now, than awhile ago, when you said something like you being on the outs with your boss.

If so, I'm glad.

Yeah, Dan, we had a good meeting a few days ago, and I'm feeling a little more secure. Thank god. I've been busting my ass for the past several weeks to try to get her to notice that I actually do my job well. Looks like it worked.

The downside of more responsibility is that I get to do things like fire people.

I don't have managerial responsibility, but I am a lead, so there's been 2 cases in the last 6 months where I've had to have a series of conversations with higher-ups about people who weren't pulling their weight or were otherwise contributing to problems. The first one got reprimanded a few times but finally left on his own, and the other one got axed in this week's round of layoffs, so it wasn't strictly a firing.

But the upside of more responsibility is minions to do your bidding.

Oh, I fired about 100 people when I had the shit job.

That was very Darwinian of you, Chuck.

Well, if I had to get fired, I would want it to be by someone like you, Specklet - that way, I could pretend to be bowing my head to hide my tears of shame and embarrassment when I am actually hiding the fact that I'm looking down your top.

Hee hee, my top *is* a little low-cut today!

Is it getting hot in here?

Well, it's absolutely sweltering in the office and I've got little beadlets of sweat in unmentionable places..

*wink*

Don't worry, you're among people for whom no place is unmentionable ;-)

*fans self, tries to control breathing*
