Today's 'Do What I Just Did,' Post. [More:]

Things I Love That Everyone Else Seems To Hate: Chuck Klosterman, Twisted Sister, Kevin Smith, Peter Bagge, FARK.com, Manowar, TV Dinners, Rhino Records, Handsome Dick Manitoba, Beetle Bailey, Journey, Rachael Ray, Soul Asylum, Kiss, Billy Joel

Things I Hate That Everybody Seems To Love: The Smiths, The Cure, Radiohead, Mushrooms, My So-Called Life, Arrested Development, Jonathan Franzen, Coldplay

Things that are neither as good or as bad as some people think: The Grateful Dead, Creed, King Of Queens, NASCAR.

Yours?
I'm not that much of an individual. Pretty much I like stuff that most people like, and I don't like stuff that most people don't like.

although jon, I also hate Jonathan Franzen and Coldplay

No one likes coldplay, many people just lose the will to live while their songs are playing, so they get left on a bunch.

Who hates Rhino records? Someone with half a smushed banana for a brain?

Dude, Nascar is dumber than fuck, (except for the racing engine noise, that's cooler than fuck) Look a car dressed as a box of soap is making endless lefts for hours and hours. I'm fairly down with the redneck arts (dynamite fishing, hunting boars with handguns, getting beered up and punching your friend, chainsmoking, casual disregard for the law, etc.) But Nascar is firmly in the thumbs down bucket.

This is fun, I'll be back.

I've heard people call them 'hacks' and 'repackagers of crap' etc.

The NASCAR thing...it's kind of like when you get stuck inside on a rainy day watching some reality show marathon-in spite of yourself you wind up picking a favorite based on personalities or whatever. That's happened to me watching NASCAR a few times.

I never seem to know what everybody else hates and loves. I suck at pop culture.

I want to do it too, this is fun. Jon, I like Klosterman and who likes Franzen? What people? Wierd. I do love Arrested Development.

Don't like that others do:

Lobster as a food, David Foster Wallace, Adam Gopnik, Arcade Fire

posted by Miko 19 July | 10:08
I like Klosterman

I love the guy, even when I disagree with him, and when I met him at a reading, he was genuinely affable. But some people really despise him.

on preview: I'm with you on Arcade Fire, even though it may be more of a hatred of the hype surrounding a 'what's the big deal' band than atual hatred per se.

I know that it puts me in some sort of cultural minority, but I have never cared much for Kim Jong-il. Flame away.

How can you love Manowar? You must be insane.

The Smiths rule. Morrissey's solo stuff - not so much. Everybody seems to like Morrissey, but I don't. On a similar note, everyone hates Michael Jackson because he's a freak. I don't. I've never been into his music, but I'm cool with him being a freak.

Nascar sucks, and F1 sucks even more.
posted by Daniel Charms 19 July | 10:13
Here's the thing though jon, I just had a quick think about it and it turns out that mostly I like things that are awesome, so who is going to disagree with that?

Things that I don't like that other people like are endless, just a few examples:

Being a stupid teenager (so many people like this, actually it's horseshit).

Not making room on the subway? You are a whoresmelt sir or madam and I hope you get triple cancer of the head.

50 Cent- Garbage in a flak jacket.

Lobster as food? That's just delightfully crazy.

What part of Nascar has personalities, what an insouciant left that viagramobile just made. What an imp.

Perfect balance of ruthless parody and earnest homage. PLus "Carry On" is catchy as hell.

Pirate Master - couldn't get into it. Maybe it was too piratey. Magma?
Cheesecake... like pinups? Charlie Sexton rocks. Steve Stevens? Who is the best French hip-hop artist? Duran Duran = Birmingham's finest (not really, it's Black Sabbath)

I'm guessing that you looooove that James Morrison record.

I love cilantro. Deadwood is too cocksuckin' gritty for me.

jonmc - when I was a lad, my band played 'Turn Me Loose' by Loverboy in the gymnasium on hot day in May. Far be it from me to cast aspersions on your favourite youthful follies.

Until you realize that it's something of a put-on and that he's really just a nice Jewish boy at heart. (Although I do believe he screwed tons of groupies, but what guy in his position wouldn't have?) and then your left with a dozen or so great pop-metal songs.

But anyone who doesn't love Deadwood can "Be Fucked!"
(I miss Deadwood, but I really miss Rome. Oh Titus Pullo, what further adventures you could have had. I have cancelled my HBO in your honor.)

While we're on the subject, everyone seems to love Sex and The City 'cept me. I thought the acting was atrocious and the characters were superficial stereotypes.

Oh, he's had a lot of sex. He had sex with a girl I knew back in the day. She had polaroids.

Well, think about it: 4 homely goofballs from the outer boroughs form a band and it starts to get succesfull and they suddenly have beautiful women chasing them. Of course they screwed themselves senselss, who wouldn't?

Yup, Steve Stevens, Billy Idol's guitarist.

French hip-hop? Probably Solaar.

James Morrison? Like, that idiot from the Doors?

Deadwood isn't as good as the book.

Oh, also, I love Schlitz in cans.

A topic confluence! Rainbaby's 'meh' on the Beatles reminds me of this:

Chuck Klosterman, in an old piece from Spin on the "10 Most Accurately Rated Artists in Rock History, on The Beatles:

4. The Beatles: The Beatles are generally seen as the single most important rock band of all time, because they wrote all the best songs. Since both of these facts are true, the Beatles are rated properly.

I happen to agree with that. I know that people disagree and consider the Beatles overrated, but I think it requires a lot of hard work and perhaps the desire to be a bit of contrarian.

A couple of caveats: I tend to reserve my hate for things that truly deserve it, like animal abusers or the Bush administration. If I can convince you to read "strongly dislike" for "hate", we can proceed. Also, I'm not all that tapped into the pop zeitgiest these days, and if you take "everybody else" to mean my peer group (white males 45-50), I'm even less so. With that in mind:

Things I Love That Everybody Else Hates - small older houses with yards, Jeremiah Johnson (I have no idea why I love this film as much as I do), Richard Brautigan, and a whole bunch of other stuff that I'm not thinking of because of stress/lack of sleep.

Things I Hate That Everybody Else Loves- tearing down small older houses with yards and replacing them with McMansions that take up the entire lot or hideous quads, post-modern architecture in general and the work of Frank Gehry in particular, whatever we're calling "freak folk" (anti-folk?) these days (seriously, it's neither folk - acoustic instruments do not always equal folk - nor is it particularly freaky; what it is is dead boring), twee and/or precious music, televised poker (WTF?), CGI/computer animation, the taste of salmon.

Things that are neither good or bad as some people think - Radiohead, religion, porn.

Raw oyster, it doesn't matter who else loves you or hates you, you will always be mine. I love the way you glisten at me, winking on your way down; sometimes you cling to your shell like clover to a cliff and I have to nibble a little at your sweet tendon until you let go. Maybe you give Shonen Knife stomachache, maybe headache, but that doesn't bother me, they're crazy anyway. I'm crazy for you, raw oyster, I don't need hot sauce or lemon like those fakers do, who claim to love you but just like to dress you up and suck you down. My mouth waters for you every day, my nostrils ache for your estuarine scent. I love you for who you are, my darling, my naked, wet, cold, raw oyster.

PS Please don't tell Velveeta I said any of this, okay?

Hey, Magma! Kickass!

I agree that pure vengeful hatred should be spewed upon those that deserve it (Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, etc.)

So... dislikes: huge wall-filling televisions, the original Star Trek series, Sex and the City, nostalgia for 80s cartoon shows and 70s sitcoms, The Lord of the Rings (the books, movies were okay), Harry Potter (badly written), clams, crab and lobster, shiny new cars, huge suburban houses with master suites the size of my entire apartment, going to the beach as an activity (as opposed to going for a walk on the beach), sitting in direct sunlight, Coke/Pepsi, ballet dancers en pointe, cats (allergies), going to the hairdresser, shopping, popcorn, being drunk, Yes and old Genesis as well (hi MGL!), "language" poetry, shoe fetishization, self-help books, dressing to look "sexy", dying your hair blonde unironically.

Loves: Old house hardware such as vent covers and doorknobs, old houses, the smell of musty basements, old books with annotations in the margins, old typewriters, the Church of England Evensong service, sari material, too many books and too many bookshelves, rocks and broken glass as a decorating scheme, biographies of people who led ordinary or obscure lives, historical stats, clothes that look like they could pass for 1918 fashion, 1920s popular hits, women who have never even considered playing dumb, geriatric bohemians, Handel, early operas, "updated" productions of opera or Shakespeare (when it works, it really works), wearing one piece of black clothing at all times (it just seems to happen that way), maps, particularly inaccurate ones, Alan Hollinghurst, Ethel Wilson, Mavis Gallant, Emma Donoghue, Marianne Wiggins, Alice Munro, Sarah Waters, etcetera, etcetera.

And just because other people have mentioned them, Radiohead. Me, I plan to be cremated with a copy of Kid A, so be gentle.

Glad to see others also hate Sex in the City... it's one of those things that make me drearily repeat myself every time I happen to catch it: "These women are utterly boring - do they ever talk about anything but men and shopping? Also, since taz mentioned it as well, (visual) porn. I didn't want to get into a discussion on it, pro or con, but for me it's just... dead, mechanical, faked, unarousing. Also, I have a very good imagination, so it's kind of superfluous.

Not implying that those who like porn lack imagination, of course.

please tell me I am not the only one who watched Love Cruise

How can I forget the show that first introduced me to the awesomeness that is Toni Ferrari? Her work on Love Cruise was topped only by her work on Paradise Hotel. (Sadly, her presence on Kill Reality still did not make that show even remotely watchable.)

And yeah, that Tori Amos makes my ears bleed.

Things I Love That Everybody Else Hates - Watching amateur soccer.

Things I Hate/dislike That Everybody Else Loves - To be honest, my biggest difficulty is understanding what everybody else (TM) loves or hates. I feel so disconnected from the judgement of everyone else these days....that said, I'm also such a pansy hater, my hate is soft. It's merely dislike. Uhh...that said, waffles?

Things that are neither good or bad as some people think - Ghosts.

This is too easy for me - I hate everything, regardless of what anyone else thinks.
