Urban Wildlife [More:]There’s been a real uptick in coyote sightings here in Seattle this summer. We’d heard so many reports, from different neighbors, that SG decided to put together a website to keep track of them. Thus was born NW Coyote Tracker. It was almost immediately linked by a couple of neighborhood blogs, which in turn lead to Science Girl being interviewed for local TV news. (Seattle peoples, check out the 11 o’clock report on KOMO tonight. They said that unless there’s a big fire, they’re sure to run her spot.)

Personally, I’ve seen two coyotes myself. The first one was a couple of years ago, but just last night, as I was driving home from work, I saw a juvenile running alongside the road in a large park near where we live. We are just over the hill from downtown, so it’s something of a surprise to see coyotes here. The ones I grew up around were really shy and would flee at the first sight of humans. These guys are much more bold; there was one report of a pair running past a couple walking down the sidewalk on Capitol Hill (a very densely populated neighborhood).

What’s the urban wildlife situation where you live? As the ‘burbs encroach on habitat, are you seeing more wild visitors in your neighborhood?
In my neighborhood, I've seen raccoons and foxes, but other neighbors have spotted bears. Not far from here is one of those "big box" malls with a Costco, Staples, etc...Sophie and I were heading out past it one day, and I just happened to notice a smallish black bear right across the street from a Kelsey's just wandering up a hill. It was pretty cool. I've (safely) crossed paths with black bears 3 or 4 times in my 20-odd years here. There have also been both moose and deer sightings around here, but....then again, living in Northern Ontario, many of you are possibly surprised we don't see polar bears!

Yeah, we get raccoons and possums from time to time. We had one family of raccoons come up on our deck while we were eating dinner (in the kitchen); they came to the sliding glass door and begged for scraps, with their little paws upturned. It was really pretty cute, but I wonder how many times they've tried that tactic and succeeded.

My yard is right near a wooded area. We get bunnies, raccoons, squirrels, deer, coyotes - even what looked like a lynx once. Sometimes I feel like I live in Wild Kingdom.

There are ducks and turtles in the backyard (we're by a city canal) and a baby anole somewhere in my room that I haven't been able to catch for three days.

As it turns out, I think Science Girl's news segment got bumped. I missed part of the broadcast due to actual work that needed to be done, but I think they dropped her because a ten-year-old girl who'd been missing since the 4th of July was found dead this evening. Which is awful, of course, and I certainly don't mean to trivialize her family's loss. Still, I am a bit disappointed that SG's bit didn't run, especially since she was so nervous about it. Perhaps they'll run it tomorrow.

Science Girl say the TV station just called and they'll be running her segment tonight. Not that anybody will see this...

The crib, soft baggy threads, nipple on demand ... every man's dream. || I feel like making an announcement.
