Sick Puppy I spent last night at the emergency vet clinic.[More:]

My dog had a series of seizures. They gave him lots of valium, and he's okay now, but the vet says he probably has epilepsy. He's 3 1/2, and has had 2 other seizures in the past, not as bad as this. We've got phenobarbital for him, and we'll go see our usual vet. Anybody taken care of an epileptic dog?

He's quiet today, but seems fine. A little more coffee, and I'll be okay, too. Well, my wallet kind of hurts.
I've never been a dog owner, but I'm so sorry theorra. Poor doggie. You're a good pet owner. I'm glad you're feeling better.

Humans can live full lives with epilepsy. I hope your puppy can too.

Aww theora55, sorry to hear about your doggie pal. I hope he, you, and your wallet will be feeling better soon.

I don't know anything about doggy epilepsy but I hope it's easily managable. What's his name?

Brody. he's a Walker hound, so he looks like a long-legged beagle. Came from the shelter 3 years ago. He's very sweet-tempered, and not at all bright.

One of my best friend's border collies has epileptic seizures, and she is now eight. She's had them since she was a puppy, every so often. She is a very sweet dog, and I know that my friends aren't too worried about it.

They are cautious about leaving her at a kennel for that reason though, they feel like the kennel might not know what to do when it happens.

Just a data point that dogs can have epilepsy and go on to live long normal lives.

I'm sorry you had such a rough night though, theora55, I'm so protective of my pets that I would have been a complete and utter wreck, and it sounds like you were too. Give Brody a good petting for me!

My former sister-in-law's dog Augie had epilepsy; it was an infrequent issue and never seemed to slow him down at all. He was a total meathead (I say that with love) but I don't think that was at all related to the epilepsy.

It's scary stuff, though; my sympathies to you and Brody (and your bank account!) and I hope all goes well from here on.

One of my sister's dachshunds has seizures for which she's been medicated for around six years with no problems (apart from the fact it's a dachshund and is therefore horrid).

thanks for all the reassurance. He's pretty hyper, so the meds may be a bonus.

:(

Hey, essexjan... ALL dachshunds aren't horrid. My pup's only half weiner dog, but I bet you'd like her.

I had two daschunds growing up, one had epilepsy and the other didn't. Once our dog was diagnosed, our vet prescribed phenobarbital. We gave the epileptic dog her meds daily and the seizures were very well controlled. She lived to be 15 years old.

I brought up the other dog because she kind of acted like a seizure dog for her sister. She'd herd her sister into a corner and just stay on her like white on rice, till she had the seizure. Her entire affect changed when her sister was going to seize. It was totally odd, till my family learned about the whole "seizure dog" thing. I don't know if you're in the market for another dog, since your wallet is still throbbing from the trip to the ER Vet, but I thought I'd share my story.

Lots of hugs to Brody, theora! (And hugs to you, too.) Here's hoping the meds keep him in good shape. Keep us updated!

I've known a few dogs with epilepsy. They did fine.

Give Brody a good scratch for me. Both of you take care.

Good luck, and it's very cool Brodie has you. I bet the vet can stabilize him and control the seizures well from here on in.
