Official Fanboy Post [More:]Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are currently my favourite musicians. They won't be everyone's cup of tea... so this might be time to back up. Anyway, here is why .

Since they record in precisely the same way as they perform, there is little discernable difference between their 'studio' albums and their live work. If anything, they are better live because of the weird (almost telepathic) energy they share. I have some rather amazing bootlegs if anyone is interested. I'm often left with the impression that they're doing some sort of magic show rather than playing the same 12 notes as everyone else.

I wish that they would realease a live CD so I could give them more money.

Also recommended: Spooked, their album with Robyn Hitchcock.

Must-read for fans: The Ghostly Ones.

That article is the one that was in NYT Mag or the New Yorker a couple years ago. It was great.

Big fan here, too.

Cool! I got freaked out when I saw them on TV here; they did a show in London recently that was jaw-dropping.

Everything they do is so elegant and direct. I really dislike hearing them with other musicians (their early CDs have some ill-advised backing parts). You cannot actually improve on what the two of them do with with two hands and two voices.

Have you seen Down From The Mountain?

erm, four hands. I'm not drunk, I swear.

I have some demos from Revival, I think. I'd have to check when I get home. Anyway, if anyone's interested I'll put 'em up.

And yeah, Spooked is definitely worth checking out. The harmonies are gorgeous. Plus, y'know, Robyn Hitchcock.

I'm interested in anything W&R have done.

bmarkey: no new album until 2008 *sigh*. I'm a fan and have seen her/them live a couple of times in London and on both times it was astounding.

I honestly think that Rawlings deserves equal billing. It's a two-headed monster.
