Holy crap, bunnies! I just saw a woman get hit by a police car. I was in the crosswalk about twenty feet behind her![More:]

There's a crosswalk in front of our building, and a traffic signal to stop traffic so you can cross. The light was still red, and the crossing signal had just started to flash the "Don't Walk" hand, when the police car turned left out of our parking deck and smacked into this poor woman. There were a couple of CNN camera guys right in front of her, and me (having just stepped into the crosswalk) about 20 feet behind.

I think it may have broken her left leg (bumper connected with her knee- OW OW OW OW). It knocked her a few feet, and she was sobing from the pain (she also said her back was hurt), but the camera guys were able to help her over to the sidewalk. It looked very painful, not life-threatening, but YIKES. What a thing to see just as you're ready to mosey home and relax.

Some of you have probably heard me tell my story of seeing a guy run down in a crosswalk and killed, about 15 years ago- I was in a third story window looking down when that happened. This time I was freaking out inside because I saw it so close, and if I'd been a few steps ahead, it might have been me! Ugh!!!
That sounds highly scary! Glad she was (mostly) ok.

Poor woman. I'm glad she's alive.

Thank goodness it wasn't you!

The cop looked about 15 years old, too, and it's NOT like the Atlanta police need any more bad PR right now. Poor guy. He just flat DID NOT look.

on preview: thanks, ico

How horrible.

I remember seeing a pedestrian being struck down in a cross walk near the commuter train station (I don't know if he survived; he was not conscious). I called 911 (so did many other people, I'm sure), but I was shocked by the number of people who continued their cell phone conversations without missing a beat. "So, Jake, we need those statistics for the proposal--holy shit! some guy just got creamed in the crosswalk--right, stats for the BigX proposal no later than noon tomorrow, right?"

Oh, sweet mercy. I hope she's okay. I'm glad you're okay.

I was struck in a crosswalk a few months ago.

...

I just wrote and deleted several sentences, one at a time. There's nothing to say about me and my accident.

...

Except this: I'm noticing that I still avoid that particular crosswalk. Which is not okay.

My god, that's awful!

Ouch! Glad she's mostly ok though! I'm sure she'll get a little something to make it all go away, though.

In high school my friends & I were waiting for a train to pass when a man hopped in front of it, right in front of my car.

I avoided train tracks for YEARS after that.

I have often thought that Atlanta cops are the worst drivers in Atlanta. They speed, run red lights, use whatever lane is empty including the wrong side of the yellow lines, you name it I have probably seen them do it (as probably you, BP).

I'm glad you're ok.

Oh, that's awful. I walk to work and have several narrow misses, including one with a police car. terrifying.

I have often thought that Atlanta cops are the worst drivers in Atlanta.

And that's a HIGHLY competitive title!

And Elsa, ouch, sorry to hear that... getting hit by a car has been a huge fear of mine ever since I saw it happen the first time. :(

That is terrible, BP! That poor lady. Hurts just to read it.

Yahh, BP! This doesn't apply to the situation. but the driving instructor who I liked told me to be ALWAYS on the lookout for little kids, animals and cute guys or girls (depending on taste)---which one can't do when one is babbling away on the cell phone.
