100 Worst Cover Songs Agree? Disagree?[More:]I think Jessica Simpson's cover of "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" should have been much higher on the list. And I like some of the songs on this list.
Some of these songs sound so awful. I want to hear these:
"You Shook Me All Night Long" by Celine Dion
"My Generation" by Hillary Duff
"Tainted Love" by Pussycat Dolls

77. "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston- Say WHAT? That's the famous version of that song. And it rules.

I quite like the Joan Jett cover of "Crimson and Clover", and I recall enjoying Joss Stone's take on "Fell In Love With A Girl Boy", though it's been awhile since I heard it. And I would have moved Whitney up to the top ten, at least. Sorry, TPS. Different strokes, etc.

As for the rest of the list, I haven't heard something like 98% of it and can't be arsed to play them all now.

There should be a specific word to describe when a talentless and uncreative modern performer manages to bribe some greedy washed-up fuddy-duddy into making an appearance on a horrid remake of their song. The Retrocrush folks catch the Puffy/Jimmy Page one, but there are a million others.

Run-DMC f Aerosmith - Walk This Way

Puff Daddy etc. and Sting (at the VMAs) - I'll Be Missing You
Janet Jackson f Q-Tip and Joni Mitchell - Got Til It's Gone
Janet, again, w/Missy Elliott and Carly Simon - Son of a Gun
Lil Kim - In the Air Tonight
Eminem and Elton John - Stan (not a precise fit, but figured I'd throw it in)

Hmm. Should've read the whole thing before I wrote that.

Lots of stuff from awards shows and benefit concerts and soundtracks and like that. What a bunch of trainwrecks.

Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Pink and Missy Elliott - Lady Marmalade
Amy Winehouse and Charlotte Church - Beat It

There was no Wing. And they completely missed some of the best bad covers ever put to vinyl.

Plus Mya is awesome. I'm very happy you left her off the list arse_hat.

You've got to be careful with covers, really. Even if the original was kind of rubbish, it'll always be preferable to purists.

*shrug*

Music is the most subjective thing in the world, followed closely by food.

Um, no. Dolly Parton did it first and much better than the crackhead lady.

(also, Winger's cover of "Purple Haze" needs to be shot on sight)

#23 "Crimson and Clover" by Joan Jett

Oh man, I love that version.

yeh jonmc: when Dolly sings it, it sounds like a love song. When Whitney sings it, it sounds like a deaththreat or possibly cats, being mangled by angry children, I can never decide.

A large percentage of the original songs suck, too.

"Come On Eileen" really needs a comma in the title.

ha!

Kind of the flip side of this would be a list of songs that need great cover versions. Crappy synth-pop remakes of "Venus" and "I Think We're Alone Now" were hits in the '80s, but could be great power pop remakes.
