What's for breakfast? [More:]I'm having Dorset Cereals muesli, soaked in apple and mango juice, with a dollop of Greek yoghurt on top, and a mug of Sumatran Mandheling coffee, which I bought last week in Bloomingdales.

How far I have come from my drinking days when, on Sunday mornings, I would come to, try to work out where I was and who I was with, and wonder how the hell I was going to get home with no money.
Oooh, is that Dorset Cereals stuff the, er, stuff that's appeared in the supermarkets recently? All done up in expensive-looking boxes? If so, is the quality reflected in the greater expense?

I had Weetabix with a sliced banana and semi-skimmed milk. Oh, and I nibbled on some of last night's leftover risotto (how I love risotto). An hour later, shamefully, I sat down to watch some old Sopranos on DVD and devoured a whole bag of microwave popcorn.

Sauteed onnion & mushroom with cream cheese omlet. Wheat toast with apple butter. Kenyan coffee.

And there's a lot to be said for waking up in your own bed, even if you're the only one in it.

Usually it's either a Trader Joe's Extremely Healthy and Fibrous Cereal (TM) or an egg-y piece of challah toast with lots of butter, and maybe some OJ, but I've been bad about going to the store lately, so today I had some instant noodles I brought home from Indonesia a few months ago (Koka brand [which is actually Singaporean but which I bought in Indonesia...] - vegetarian curry flavor!). I really wanted to do the noodles Indonesian-style, fried up with an egg and some dried onions and shrimp crackers or something, with dobs of burn-your-face-off sambal, but the cupboards were bare! It was marvelously unhealthy and I devoured every spicy bite.

TheDonF: Yes, it's the boxed one and it's really good.

The NYC effect has still not worn off. Gah!

ooh! I was thinking of asking just this question, because I've been trying to eat breakfast, and I'm not a breakfast person. My idea of breakfast happens sometime around 1 p.m. and has champagne involved.

Nevertheless, here's what I've been having since trying to breakfast myself: pear with peanutbutter; egg on toast; yogurt and honey. I need more ideas.

This morning, though, I ate what I didn't eat last night: chicken with mushrooms and orzo.

Actually, Jon's just goin' out now for bagels and coffee, kind man that he is... it is nice having great bagels steps from your front door.

(And beer, fur later... : )

A pork chop & a couple of soft boiled eggs. And decaf. And some tea.

Seriously, I'm surprised you guys don't have a standing order to have the bagels and schmear of your choice lofted up onto your balcony on a daily basis. I can see it now: The shout of "Yo, bagels!" and then a whooshing sound, followed by the *thud* of it bouncing off your patio door and the crinkling of the paper bag as it rolls briefly. Then Pips preps them and puts them on a serving dish laid out *perfectly*, arranged alphabetically first by type of bagel then by type of cream cheese. She serves them in her studded leather apron to jon, who's sitting at table buck-ass-naked, reading Rolling Stone and painstakingly burning the faces off all the pop celebrities with his cigarette.

I personally will be beating up smaller kids and taking their Eggos.

Oh, and jon, make sure you chew your cigarettes this time. Don't just inhale them.
posted by Eideteker 17 June | 08:17
That's inaccurate, eide. I never read Rolling Stone.

I never read Rolling Stone

dude, not even to point & laugh? seriously, even i read 'people' or some schlock like that from time to time. note that i never actually pay for it...

we had french press coffee made from mocha java beans that were delivered along with fresh greens from a local grocery service, and 'scones', tho they're more muffin-like than american 'scones', made with whole wheat flour, fresh cherries and cream cheese.

I just woke up. I was working till odd hours yesterday again... Groggy is an understatement. I am drinking coffee from a bucket.

Later, hopefully I will get breakfast/brunch prepared by someone else. That will be nice. And then some shopping?
Frankly, I'd rather stay in bed and sleep a couple days longer...

Coffee now. Granola and fresh strawberries are planned for later. I'm still full from last night's trip to Pies 'n' Thighs.

Eideteker: Unfortunately, the leather studded apron's at the cleaners.

(I'm really more an old t-shirt and cotton panties gal anyway.)
posted by Pips 17 June | 09:07
Today it was two cups of cold-brewed iced coffee from the French press plus a Balance Bar (cookie dough; a bit on the melty side due either to the heat or the fact that I sat on it for about three minutes without realizing it).

Also heartburn, not from the coffee or the Balance Bar, but remnant from last night's 2 a.m. pigout. Note to self: Never go to bed immediately after eating; especially never go to bed immediately after eating spicy and fat-filled foods.

I woke up at 8 (wtf is wrong with me?!) and am just now getting hungry.

I will have strawberries, watermelon, cantelope, a bagel, maybe some eggs...

I was thinking Waffle House, I could go for a large order of hash browns scattered , smothered , covered, chunked , diced , and topped. maybe some scrambled eggs with chili and cheese on top. I like my food on top of my morning foods.

Two toaster waffles sandwiching two microwaved Brown n Serve sausage patties in a rather demented but tasty breakfast sandwich. Better than going out for a McGriddle.

Bagel with salmon flavored cream cheese, black coffee, emergen-C. Now I'm at work (grumble, bitch, moan, complain) and I'm having trail mix and a ginger ale because that's what we're giving away in the Hospitality Room. Well, that and doughnuts and bad coffee, but I ODed on those yesterday.

Banana, strawberry, kiwi smoothie with litchi juice. Some really nice tea that I got from one of the Indian stores on Main Street. Later will be something with a potato, and maybe an egg or two. I only eat granola during the week so I don't get sick of it.
posted by Zack_Replica 17 June | 12:44
Usually, I make a big hearty breakfast: scrambled eggs with three or four veggies, some wheat toast, plenty of juice and coffee, or breakfast burritos with beans, tomatoes, avocado, and hot sauce, or frittata thick with sweet potatoes and spicy vegetables, or homemade granola, or big homemade whole-wheat cinnamon rolls.

But this morning, after a restless night of bad dreams, I only had the stomach for water, Tylenol, and lukewarm coffee.

it ended up being a biscuit with gravy and bacon and an over easy egg...hangover food...

i decided against making my favorite, carmelized apples and sausage over a pancake...

on the upside my signature sandwich is very popular...over hard egg with bacon, garlic, jalapeno, onion, tomato, and chipolte mayo.

[spellcheck thinks that chipolte would best be replaced with poltergeist...or pyrotechnics]

Breakfast? What's breakfast? Tried to eat here this morning, because I'd heard good things about their food. Had such a bad experience that I was prompted to write a citysearch review for the first time in my life. Here is is:

Service so terrible I don't even know how the food is.
1 Star Rating: Not Recommended

06/17/2007 Posted by dersins

We attempted to eat brunch at Roux today, and failed, miserably. In the time between the two of us placing our order and our decision to simply walk out, we watched several neighboring tables arrive, order, receive their food, and finish eating. We had no explanation from the server as to why our orders were taking so long to arrive, but more than 45 minutes later with no food in sight, our server assured us that our food was "just being plated." Another 15 minutes after that, still without food, an explanation, or even an apology, we put five dollars on the table to pay for our coffee and left. The coffee was good, but I see no reason to return to Roux, despite the positive things I've heard about their food. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in Portland, and not one I care to risk repeating. (OK, maybe it's not fair to refer to it as a "dining" experience, since we never actually received our food, but that's sort of the point, isn't it?)

Pros: Pretty good coffee

Cons: Unapologetically incompetent service
posted by dersins 17 June | 14:51
I'm always a little suspicious when a restaurant has so many five-star ratings. The customers who had bad experiences at Roux appear to have had the same problems as you - slow service.

Dersins, I tried to post a negative review about the people who scotch-guarded my carpet (I decided to hire them after seeing that they had the top rating on Citysearch NY) and they removed it? Why?...they say they don't want any mention of damage and in addition to the scotch-guarding without my permission, I described how they broke my toilet, left it for me to discover and tried to flirt with me when they came back. Was I just supposed to smile and pretend nothing's the matter? After that I would only use Citysearch to find an address.
