16 June 2007

Soooo Hot. It's close to a hundred degrees outside, omg. Having a date downtown (girl friend, y'all) for 1:30 p.m., I left the house and started walking around 1... and realized about five steps later - no way. No fucking way. [More:]

So, I turned around, backed up, and took the tram instead. Met for wine and snacks and conversation, and by the time we were leaving, around 3:30 p.m., it felt even hotter - and so I took the tram back. This is actually the first time I've used the tram since the beginning of April, as I usually walk (and walk, and walk... for miles and miles).

Even with the much shorter walk, I was streaming by the time I got home. Hair almost totally wet from perspiration. Wow. I cranked the AC, bunnies, and am now sitting in blessed, wonderful, artificial cool. Damn.

I did have the fabulous wine, though. It's called Biblia Xora... "Book Country" - or maybe it's supposed to be more like "Bookland"; I'll have to ask mr. taz when he gets back. Fabulous name, and it's one of the best white wines I've ever tasted. Now I have to go start haunting the cavas to try buy some. Like about 100 cases.
oh, btw - tram, not metro (subway/underground), because the closest metro is the Acropolis Station. By the time I've walked there, I'm already basically pretty much to where I'm going 90% of the time, anyway.

and another random, heat-addled, feverish thought: It speaks well for the house that I didn't really even have a clue how seriously hot it was outside until I left home, and I'm pretty impressed. high ceilings and thick walls are sweet in the heat.

I'm, uh, hot in a different way. I don't know what they put in the water in NYC, but I was horny the whole time I was there and it's not worn off yet.

Hahaha! I knew we shouldn't expose you to the Joe Famous effect. :)

NYC should ban private cars and bring back streetcars--that was one of the things I really liked about Toronto.
posted by brujita 16 June | 10:11
aah. Well, this isn't a streetcar (which I love - old New Orleans girl here), it's actually a modern, swooshy, aerodynamic (pretty elegant) railtype thingy, which is called "the tram" here, and isn't at all what I expected when I first heard of "the tram".

At least I can have a cold shower in my new bathroom.
posted by essexjan 16 June | 10:18
You see? God works in mysterious ways. He never closes a NY door, without opening an Essex showerhead. Or something.

I don't know, it's been pretty much a lifetime since I had any religious training, but I'm pretty sure there's something in there about horny Essex girls.

Yeah, thanks a lot God. I don't get laid, I have to stand under cold water instead.

So... looking at it, yeah - it's a tram. It's just not what I think of as "tram" or "streetcar", with my old 19th century NO/SF ideas about what those look like. :)

I love you, Jan.

And, in the spirit of TMI, I will mention that underwear is apparently the last thing to dry/cool off. I think I need to go slip into a giant t-shirt, and nothing else.

It looks like the one in Dublin.

taz! I am going to be in your city, drinking your wine, July 9-12. Are you going to be there? Meetup? 99 bottles of Βίβλια Χώρα on the wall...

The tram in Athens?! It works?! Huh.

essexjan, in NYC, horny is a state of mind.

ps. When V. explains what biblia xora is let me know. I know it is a ancient name for the region where this wine comes from but I cannot find why it would have been named bookland... Hm. And now I am very curious and I have to work and it is not good. I says.

OMG! Carmina!

I'm totally here, babybaby - waiting for YOU!

er, if for any reason I'm not here, I'll be in Salonika... We can work it out!!!!

One of the unexpected blessings during my trip to nyc last summer was a/c on public transportation. I had not thought about it but it was really a nice break, to get on a train or a bus and be cool for the ride.

*makes a note of biblia xora*

taz, is it cooling down at night there? I am imagine a nice little streetlife after dark there. . .cool white wine, etc.

don't ruin it for me, if it's not true. . .
posted by danf 16 June | 13:04
I won't ruin it for you... What you describe is very much like Thessaloniki, (and some other places) and... I'm not so sure how much like Athens. Athens seems a lot more conservative to me, at this early stage.

I've been to some Greek villages where the entire population pretty much picks up and shines around midnight (everybody!), and other places that were just horribly dull, before and after midnight.... So, just like anywhere, there really isn't much of a national profile.

Most Greeks everywhere, though, like to sit outside in the sunshine and drink wine or raki and nibble on olives, feta, tomato and bread - and I'm totally down with that.

Bizarre that it's so hot in Europe. The weather in Jerusalem has been unseasonably mild. Mid-70's well into the afternoon. I just spent the evening in the garden celebrating my the fellowship I just got for next year (whoo!). Arak and good news are a nice mix.

Not to worry, though. I'll be back in the blast furnace that is Chicago next week.

It was nearly 100 degrees here in mid-MO...and i cooked all day...i literally drank a gallon and a half of water and immediately sweated it all out. My co-workers and i took turns taking breaks in the walk-in cooler...it was actually about 15 degrees cooler outside than in the kitchen...

It is Not. Fun. to cook when you are completely soaked in your own juices...i need a vacation.

This is why my only goal for the weekend has been to be as naked as possible, for both the hots.

Sorry, eth, it is way too hot for me to ogle for too long...

Wow... I left my cell phone outside for a few minutes, and now it thinks it 66 C. (that's, like, 150 fahrenheit). I told you it was hot!

Technically, I think you'll find it is a "Light Rail" system.
