(I have to get up early tomorrow and probably won't stay too late. Occhi, will y'all let me know if you're not coming so I don't sit around waiting and pining longer than I have to?)

Oh, I'm figuring 6:30 or 7-ish, not majorly late. But yes, I'll let you know if something weird happens and we won't be able to make it at all.

But I still expect you to pine, dammit.

I'm pining already. And for you I balsa.

(It's a line from a Lorrie Moore book. I never quite got it, but it makes me laugh.)

(It's also possible that I misremembered the second wood.)

Mudpuppie, I think it's "for you I pine, for you I balsam". And I think it's a reference to an old-timey souvenir, some kind of conifer-scented doodad.

I don't think I can get there before 7:30 at the absolute earliest, though.

Hee. I prefer balsa.

Conifer-scented doodad?

('Balsam' makes me think of shampoos from the '70s.)

You got it, tangerine. I can't find the book, else I'd type it up. And yeah, it's like a sachet thingy, I think, being sold at a yard sale.

When I hear "balsam" I think of the gift D'Artagnan's mother gives him in The Three Musketeers, "a certain balsam, which she had from a Bohemian and which has the miraculous virtue of curing all wounds that do not reach the heart."
