Wow, I never knew there were such bitter rivalries among racing fans! I guess it makes sense. Do most people root for the guy whose hometown is closest to theirs, or what?

I'm not a big fan of racing, but my father is, and some of it you just absorb. I really wonder how good a move this is. If he has a legion of fans (a lot of them true fans, as in fanatic) that buy into his good ole' boy image and then changes that image, he may lose more in mindshare and marketing than he will gain in winning more races.
