From London to Jamaica This Saturday we saw Chris Salewicz read from his new biography of Joe Strummer, Redemption Song: The Ballad of Joe Strummer. (It’s very good, by the way. I haven’t quite finished yet, but I feel confident in recommending it. Salewicz does a great job of humanizing someone who always seemed so much larger than life.) →[More:] During the course of the reading, he played snippets of a bootlegged live recording of The Clash that sounded very familiar to me. As it turns out, it was a show they played (at 4 AM!) on November 27, 1982, at the Jamaican World Music Festival in Montego Bay, and the reason it sounded familiar is that I have a copy of it myself.
