We have strawberries...and cherries, too! Bunnies, I need your help! [More:]One of my housemates brought home five pounds of gorgeously ripe strawberries and two pounds of equally lovely cherries. In a disciplined effort to avoid green apple quick step or give each other strawberry shampoos, give us some ideas of things - preferrably edible - to do with our bounty.
Take said strawberries. Cut in half. Put in a container that has a wide base and can hold liquid. Sprinkle with sugar. Brown sugar works great. I'd say a tablespoon per 10 medium size berries. Sprinkle cognac or some sort of sweet liquor. Put in the refrigerator for several hours. You can start eating little by little immediately, but the point is that given time and cold temperatures they will be releasing these sweet juices like nektar. You may top with ice cream or cream, or just nothing. I like them bare.

Cherries, I do not know. I can barely wait to wash them, let alone do something with them.

Oy, I am jealous.

De-hull and cut up some of the strawberries and freeze if you don't think you'll use them all before they spoil. Frozen, thawed strawberries are great to mix in yogurt, ice cream, pancakes, etc. Husband often brings home an entire flat of Plant City strawberries. I usually share them with friends, because I'm not that organized to use them all before they over ripen.

You could make a big fruit salad with the strawberries and the cherries, and other fruit that is in season. Just last night I had some of a gorgeous fruit salad made of blueberries, peaches, cherries, watermelon, and strawberries in a hollowed-out watermelon. I usually make a simple syrup of water, sugar, and a little vanilla extract for the sauce. It's heavenly.

And there's always Cherry Cobbler, Cherry Crisp, etc.

Cherries: Wash. Gorge self.

I, a skinny girl acting alone, can easily eat two pounds of cherries in a week.

ooooh, chocolate fondue with strawberies and covered with pecans or almonds or...

Yes! Yum! carmina has a great idea! Along the lines of fondue, melt some semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave, dip strawberries, and set on wax paper to harden.

I think you're going to have to throw a party. You could make strawberry - champagne cocktails or some other drink using the fruit.

Sangria! I threw some strawberries into a batch of sangria last night and it was delicious. Also, strawberry and/or cherry daiquiris are wonderful, and use an astounding amount of fruit. Blenders on stun.

Cherry brandy: 1 lb pitted cherries, 1/2 c sugar, 4 c brandy, 2 cloves. Pour into clean 1/2 gal jar, store in a cool dark place for 12 weeks, shaking jar every few days. Strain. Keep to give as xmas presents, if you can, and serve the brandified cherries over ice cream. It only makes about 2 pints, though, so it may not last that long. Unfortunately, this doesn't really work with strawberries.

And I third the fondue idea. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Make jam. Out of either. Or both.

oooh. I was just looking at recipes for strawberry salsa. This one looks interesting, but doesn't call for olive oil, which I would include. At any rate, you can just throw together whatever you want... I see recipes with all sorts of different ingredients: raisins, peppers, tomatoes, grapes, cucumber, cilantro, onion, vinegar, honey, mustard, whatever. It might be interesting to whip something up if you're going to be having fish, chicken or pork. Or have it on cream cheese with tortilla chips, omg.

I'm in the wash and gorge camp on both. But if you must make something, I'd go with preserves.

Strawberries - squeeze a handful of will-be-overripe-within-the-hour berries through your fingers into a cocktail shaker half filled with crushed ice. Hand-smash a very ripe peach into same. Add strong dash of ginger/galangal syrup from the guy at the farmers's market. Follow with enough chilled vodka to get the job done. Shake, pour into martini glass rimmed with lime, and garnish with twist of said lime. Lastly, float a flower blossom on top (borrage is nice)

Go sit in the sun and enjoy summer.

Ooooh, I envy. Make pie. Pie pie pie pie. And tarts. And trifle. And shortcake!
Aw, just go read this page.

Jam.
4C sliced strawberries, 3C sugar, bring to a boil in a non-reactive pan. Remove from heat, add 1/2 pouch of liquid pectin (roughly 2T), and 2T lemon juice, return to boil (watch for boil-over), pour into clean jars, let cool, then store in the fridge. If it doesn't set up, you will have the best strawberry pancake syrup ever.

You can properly can it too so you can enjoy it later, but I won't bother you with the details of that.

Hull and freeze whatever strawberries won't be gobbled up in time.

The rest of them, hull and halve, and dip in a yogurt & (lots of) dark brown sugar mixture. Or sprinkle with sugar and then sprinkle with balsamic vinegar.

Get some Bisquick or the whole wheat variety of baking mix and make the shortcakes. Do not use the premade sponge-y things. Make strawberry shortcake. Use vanilla ice cream instead of whipped cream.

Make fresh strawberry pie.
