I have this dress on [More:]today and men are falling all over themselves to hold doors open for me, and are looking at me and smiling at me. A lot. At the coffee shop 2 guys offered to buy me coffee. No, the dress isn't see-thru. As someone who normally barely registers on the male awareness meter, this is weird.

What's so special about this white dress? I need to know so I can incorporate the knowledge into future clothing purchases ;P Is it because it's white?
I'm not sure, but do you want to discuss it over coffee? My treat!

It's spring. People are all springy. Don't feel bad, ico, the last time a passing woman smiled at me, I felt great until I noticed that my fly was open.
posted by jonmc 08 June | 07:59
Mmm summer-y.

Hah. Ok, I thought maybe it was a white = virgin kind of thing. I have a little brown cardingan type thingy over it, see, so I'm not even bare-looking....totally covered up. And no makeup and wet hair, and guys are dropping like flies when I walk by. I hope I don't sound like I'm bragging, because this stuff never happens. It's the dress, not me.

It is a wonderful, summery dress.

Yes, iconomy, don't overthink this plate of beans -- it is spring, people feel happy and outgoing, and wearing a pretty dress says you are comfortable being noticed. I have also noticed more smiles and open doors lately, though I've still been dressing as my usual scruffy self.

That's really a pretty dress, though.

Maybe you've caught the nice weather too.

It's not the dress, the dress is just showing off you. So get us a photo of you in the dress ASAP, 'kay? We'll analyze it all for you. This is obviously critical, so don't waste any time.

Seconded, and seconded.

Yeah, I smile at people more when the weather is good. Maybe you're doing that too, and people are just returning the happiness.

Man, I wish someone would buy me coffee right now!

It makes you look like a vestal virgin.

(Just watched History of the World the other night).

Still, its very virginal.

here's a thought:

that dress is very, very, extremely feminine. if you (like me) typically opt for a more sporty, tailored and/or casual look, it's likely that you're reaping the benefits of suddenly zooming up the barometer on the va-va-voom omg GIRLY!!1one charts.

i get a similar response when i wear a frilly pink blazer (that i hate, but it was $2 and goes well with several skirts).

y'know what i dig is the one day out of a thousand when my hair is just amazing. i had one of those on monday; for some reason my hair was super bouncyshinysoft, and i was able to give it a quick brush, a light shot of spray, and it stayed Amazing Pornstar Glam Hair all day long; no wrestling it into bondage with the barrettes & ponytailers. so, since i rarely wear it down due to the fact that it is usually just Feral Sullen Cranky Hair, i'd say at *least* twenty people commented on it.

Iconomy I'm certain you're lovely all the time, but I bet that dress makes you extra-lovely!

I have long known that it is useless to ask her for a photo of herself.

But I have no doubt that she looks extremely fetching. My guess for the extra attention, other than the qualities that we all are aware of here, if that it's still early summer, and possibly not that many women have started dressing like that yet. Plus, it seems West Coast, which may add to it. In Santa Monica, every other woman walking down the street looks like that, possibly.

(My hair is wet also, but I have a grey hoodie and a ballcap on. ALTHOUGH, an 80-something woman checked me out in the pool this morning. . .)

Somewhat off topic: why does Old Navy crop everyone's heads at the nose? It's really disconcerting.

They have no eyes, Ma! WHY DON'T THEY HAVE ANY EYES?!

Because the photographer is Little Orphan Annie.

To me the dress seems very, um, accessible. The thought of how quickly certain dresses can be removed is, nice. Sorry if that sounds dirty. It looks very comfortable and soft, and you probably feel and act comfortable in it because of that. It also has just a touch of hippie to it, which may connote some qualities associated with that (easy going, free love, listens to jam bands (kidding, kidding)). And yeah, there's that dichotomy of it being virginal and sexy at the same time.
I hope I didn't ruin it for you. It really is a pretty dress.

Women in spring/summer dresses make me happy. I live across the street from a university, and when the weather suddenly got nice I loved watching all the college women walking down the street in pastel or brightly colored dresses. They just look so happy.

Is that Macy's dress ad (or maybe it's a lingerie ad?) running where you are? The one in which all these women are in a field, and they all suddenly put on summer dresses that fit them perfectly and they dance around in the field? That ad also makes me happy.

One of the things I hate about San Francisco is the lack of opportunities to wear really summery dresses, because it doesn't stay hot long enough.

It must feel schitzoid to have to bundle up in the City during summer, then go over to Oakland and have it be in the mid-90's.

I think it accentuates your bosom, and the length of the skirt leaves a lot to the imagination:)

I bet you looked great in it too!

That would imply that I ever go over to Oakland... :-)

I actually had an out-of-town friend suggest that to me a few weeks ago, when I was complaining that it was freezing and foggy. "Go to Berkeley!" he said. "It will be warm there!"

"But... then I'd be in Berkeley."

Hey Oakland has the Hell's Angels, the A's and the Raiders and Machine Head...I think I see your point.
posted by jonmc 08 June | 12:06
As someone who grew up in the East Bay, I must protest the direction in which this thread is headed. I have many fond memories of Berkeley, and Oakland has a charm of its own. I especially miss Berkeley around this time of year. Do yourself a favor and cross the bridge every now and again.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

I met my husband for lunch and asked him about the dress. His first words were, "Well it makes your jumblies look amazing". After I laughed he said, "No, really...you look...um...ripe. Your breasts look amazing. Like....very full and grabbable."

So there. Nothing to do with my attitude or my smile or my confidence. As usual, it's all about the tittays - this dress makes tittays looks great. Carry on.

damn, I revealed my creepy, art-schooly critique for nothing.

Do yourself a favor and cross the bridge every now and again.

I know, it's irrational snobbery and nothing more than that. I suffered from it for years when I lived in Cambridge and most of my friends lived in Boston.

But I also have no car and live nowhere near BART anymore, so it just becomes an enormous hassle. And given how much I like SF, and how many neighborhoods here I still haven't explored anywhere close to fully, the East Bay tends to fall off my radar.

In any event: Yay, iconomy! Glad you have an answer.

It's a nice simple look, and guys like the bare shoulders. At least this guy does.
posted by King of Prontopia 08 June | 12:53
No bare shoulders - I had a cardigan on over it.

hellbient, creepy art school critiques are the best. Always appreciated. The creepier the better. Now if you'll excuse me I have a jam band to go listen to, k?

Is jumblies a direct quote? I guess maybe I'd heard it before, but it's rather exotic (and fun) name for the bosom to me. *jots note re future use*
posted by danostuporstar 08 June | 13:09
Yep he said jumblies. I think it's Monty Python? Not sure, but I always thought it was. Or maybe it's just English slang for boobs?
