Los Angeles Meetup Recon So... Um... I'm in LA now, and I'd like to have a meetup. But I'm not sure where, y'know, and I think sometime next week would be good, but, y'know, I don't have a real busy schedule or nothin' either, so, um, what do the rest of you think? And stuff.→[More:]

Things of note—
I'd like to find a good bar, or several good bars.
Things I like in a bar, either:
-Divey and cheap
-Excellent beer

Either option would be nice. Though cheap is also good, because then I can enjoy myself without a job (yet, though Hustler gave me a callback).

I'm in the Palms neighborhood, though can drive (while I'm wary of jinxing myself, why does everyone complain about the traffic? It's vigorous, but there's less dumbassery per capita here than most places I've seen, at least so far).

But yeah, wanted to feel people out (not up!) before posting on MeTa and herding cats.

Oh dude! I was so close to calling a LA meetup! (I'm in Culver City.) I'm in. Wherever (westsided preferable, but I en't selfish), whenever. Monday would be excellent but I'm flexible.

Sadly I can't offer suggestions on places to meet or good bars, being as I don't know any. I can ask my bf when he gets home. Maybe one of the natives can chime in?

I know there's a decent karaoke bar in the neighborhood, though I haven't been.

The karaoke bar in question is Boardwalk 11, and it's decent. I don't really know how to evaluate a karaoke place. Uh... people sing. Badly. :) I don't remember the price or quality of the alcohol, but it's not scary LA-expensive, anyway.

The only other bar I've been too in the Palms area is Saints & Sinners, which is okay, but probably too small and crowded for a meetup.

Oh, and I saw Saints and Sinners, and it looked too themey for my tastes, though I might go there.

I have heard that there's awesome kareoke around here, mostly third-hand through some dude who keeps promising to invite my girlfriend, but keeps blowing her off.

Actually I lied. Coined has informed me that technically we're in Palms too--roughly Venice and Overland.

Westside it is. Bitches. (I feel so L.A.)

Haha. Yeah, I'm at Vinton and Palms, so I could walk to where you're at no problem. Is there a good lunch spot around there?

You're a veggie, right?

TBH I haven't explored much in the immediate area (long story), but The Vegan Joint looks to be damn close to you. I keep meaning to check it out. There's Versailles on Venice, which is pretty good if a little (more than a little) on the greasy side (and I think not very veggie-friendly). There's also a little place in the Venice/Overland shopping strip (I forget the name of the cafe itself) that has pretty good sammidges and whatnot, and also free wifi.

Yeah, I'm a veggie, and the Vegan Joint is pretty tasty. Though their yellow curry is so nice that I stay away from nearly everything else. Versailles didn't look like there was gonna be a damn thing for me to eat. Maybe the Vegan Joint sometime? Or there's that Himilayan joint on Venice that's pretty tasty... Which I think is pretty close to you.

Vegan Joint is totally walkable for me. And I think I know the Himalayan place you're thinking of, and it's close too. Sure, send me an email sometime. My schedule is super-flexible.
