So, Martin Bashir, that hack who did that Michael Jackson documentary, is on Nightline now? I guess this happened after Koppel left? Is it still the best reporting on network teevee? Is that still not saying much?[More:]

Among shows whose names end in -line, where does Nightline rank? I'm thinking it's worse than Frontline, which is great, and somewhat worse than that short-lived sitcom Lateline. I'm not sure where I think it ranks in relation to MTV's Loveline, or, for that matter, What's My Line? But wasn't there a remake of What's My Line? Are there other shows whose names end in -line that I'm not remembering?

Oh: inspired by this post.

From the little I've seen recently, Nightline has become a shadow of its former self. I'd say each show is about 50% devoted to news-of-the-day reports/interviews and about 50% human interest/celebrity gossip/"What a wacky world we live in!" type fluff. (And the news portion often consists entirely of such "important" stories as the Anna Nichole Smith paternity dispute or the Don Imus kerfuffle.)

And, as a journalist, Bashir makes Geraldo Rivera look like Edward R. Murrow.

I thought of another -line show: Dateline, which also used to be at least occasionally decent, and which would probably terrify me these days.

Caroline (in the City)

Is Caroline in the City one of those live-action shows with animated opening credits? When I was little, I hated shows like that. 'Bait-and-switch,' I'd've said, had I known the phrase at the time.

Yes, because I believe Leah Thompson's character was a comic strip artist in the mold of a Cathy "Cathy" Guisewhite. Hence the show's focus on the holy trinity: man trouble, diet-induced mood swings, and shopping-related injuries. (I assume, as I never actually watched it.)

Just the thought of Dateline raises my blood pressure by 17%.
