Because I'm an idiot. [More:]
A few days ago a friend called and invited me to dinner at a restaurant. We're not that close, but we have gone on a few outings together. She recently graduated from her college program, and it's her birthday tomorrow. I didn't buy a gift or a card and now I'm wondering if I should have. Dinner is tonight. I wouldn't want or expect a gift, but maybe it's the right thing to do.

Can I buy her dinner if other people have gifts? God, I hope there are no gifts.
Get her a card, chip in for her dinner.

Good idea Specklet. I have time to stop for a card.

Yeah, if you're not that close, she won't be expecting a gift, but if it's kind of a celebration-y dinner, a card could not go amiss.

Oh, and you're not an idiot!

You should just scribble "Happy Birthday, pal!" on a cocktail napkin while they're in the restroom. It'll be a classy surprise.

If you know that she drinks, show up with a bottle of whatever in your purse. Then if it feels right, whip it out and say Happy Birthday. If not, take it home and you'll have access to it later.

Plus a card.

If you do the bottle of booze, wrap it and keep in quiet; most eating and drinking establishments won't let you bring booze in.

I second cmonkey's suggestion, but may I also suggest adding a kiss in bright red lipstick?

I'm back. Already. A card was perfect. I wasn't sure if it was going to be a celebratory thing because she did the inviting, and only mentioned casually that it was her birthday. It's hard to guess whether to bring a gift or not to these kind of things.

A cocktail napkin would have been much nicer than a Hallmark from CVS. Mushy, mushy, stupid, stupid cards these days.

Thanks everybody.

Beltane Forecast: || "What's in the curry?" I asked her. I thought she said, "Toodle-oo!"
