Yep. I lived on a crappy fellowship in grad school (supplemented by babysitting and working the night shift at a sleazy motel), then lived on not much more for a couple of years after that before I got a regular job with benefits. I was on food stamps for awhile and had to get medical care at the United Way free clinic for several years (which, believe me, is not fun when it turns out that the problem is undiagnosed cancer).

The first time I ever needed a screen name (for TWoP if I recall) I couldn't think of one, and didn't think I'd really comment much so it didn't matter. So I picked gaspode, and it just stuck for most other things I signed up for. There are quite a few gaspodes around of course, given that it's a Terry Pratchett character, but I'm gaspode on the sites I care about. And while I think Pratchett is OK (with a couple of really good books) I'm not a slavering fangirl, so it's kind of funny that I've stuck with it.

Well, many sorts of poverty are kind of relative. But I grew up with just my mum, on welfare. We lived in project housing and couldn't afford a car. I remember being hideously embarrassed doing the grocery shopping with her and having to carry them home when I was a teenager. She's doing a lot better now and has a good job, but still hasn't gotten a car because she's so used to not having one. I'm worried about her retirement though, and think I will be subsidising her quite a bit.

Her parents had no running water or electricity when she was born; she wore the same pair holey sneakers to school for two years at one point (in upstate New York winters).
