monitor poll and questions and resolution and things and ferrets and also a llama [More:]

What kind of monitor do you have (CRT/LCD and also brand) and what size is it?

What do you have your resolution set to? 1024x768? 1600x1200? Llama resolution?

If you decided that you were tired of your 22 inch CRT monitor putting out enough heat to give you a suntan and thought it was time to buy an LCD monitor, what would you get? It seems they are finally getting pretty decent for those of us that like to play the games and such, but I know jack and shit about LCD monitors.

I lied about the ferrets.

Everyone I know pronounces "llama" with the hard L, however since the LL's are doubled, shouldn't it be pronounced "hama" or perhaps "yama" (those darn dialectics, always making things difficult)?

Back on topic, I have a laptop and I doubt I will ever go back to a conventional big box + monitor setup.

I was considering buying a ferret the other day. A dozen ferrets in one cage is just too damn cute, even when most of them are sleeping.

I was wondering the same thing myself recently (not about that, I say "yama", "pie-eh-ah" etc). A knowledgeable friend recommended the ViewSonic VX2235wm 22". He also said to make sure wherever you get it from offers a seven day or similar no quibble return or refund. That way you can check for dead pixels and return it if necessary. (The price on the page linked seems a little steep for the US though).

Laptops are fine for all your portable computing needs, but for the playing of the games, not so much.

Monitor: 19"CRT. Brand is an AOC (probably a clone of something). Res is 1152x864@85hz.
LDC monitors... found reviews here. For gaming, the lower pixel response time the better. 12ms is high, and there will probably be ghosting if there is a lot of action, especially with newer games. There are a lot on the market that are 8ms or lower. Lower=better. I've noticed a lot at 4ms and even some at 2, so look for those. If you go to a store that has a lot of monitors and there are movies playing on them, or if you whip the pointer around on screen, you'll see the screen trying to keep up. That's not want you want when you're gaming. Also, here's general info on LCD monitors (note it was written in 2006, and monitors have gotten better).

i have a 15" macbook pro, no external monitor but the LCD is the best monitor i've ever had. i run it at 1440x900 (max). i've seen the apple studio displays and they inspire a level of lust in me that is frankly terrifying.

a friend got a viewsonic like gecko's recommending and it looks very swanky. i had a 19" viewsonic crt for my old windoze machine that i gave to my SO - not only is it a nice monitor, looks sharp and easy to calibrate for photos and stuff but the damn thing flatly refuses to die. but it's ginormous. i ran that one at 1024x768 so the refresh rate wouldn't kill me, but then i'm not doing illustrator or photoshop for money.

there's a llama farm a couple miles from my apt that i ride past just about every afternoon.

i don't have any ferrets tho. sorry. here's a song, instead.

Last fall I got two 19" Dell LCDs for $250/ea. They've been great--the dual monitor thing is a god-send. The resolution is set at 1280x1024.

I have a 21" Trinitron that recently gave up the ghost, I am currently borrowing a higher grade of 21" Trinitron from a friend and waiting for my own off lease high grade Trinitron to arrive from the guy on E-bay. I am a color depth fiend, and I find it sorely lacking on LCD's (at least the ones in my price range. I'm hoping this one coming will last me long enough for LED backlit LCDs to become affordable, or until OLED mointors actually appear on the market. There are things about the current LCD's that I like, but at best they seem a step sideways, not a step forward. Better options are on the horizon at least.

I use a laptop at home, but I have a 20" LCD from HP (the LP2065) at work that is pretty nice in 1600x1200. It's not the sharpest picture in the world, but it still beats staring at a CRT all day.

17" Samsung LCD @ 1024x768. The screen real estate seems to be just as big as my ol' 19" ViewSonic. I loves it.

I've been corrected - my monitor is 19".
