Down comforter distress Bunnies, I need some advice....→[More:]I've had a down comforter for the better part of 12 years and I've come to the conclusion that it's about time to make it into a secondary blanket [you know, it's still good for snuggling under on the couch, but it's definitely seen better...read: warmer and fluffier...days.]

So! Two things!

The first being that, of course, I'd like to get as much bang for my buck [*coughs, blushes* getcher minds outta the gutter!] as possible and would love to hear any suggestions of places - especially online - that people have had good experiences with both purchase and product. I'm looking for a very warm one as I like to keep my bedroom windows open as close to year round as possible.

The second being to find out people's experiences with down alternatives, a path I'm willing to explore, but know little about.

I actually bought a down comforter a year ago from Overstock.com; which was something of a gamble since the product descriptions on their website aren't great, but it ended up working out well.

Ikea.

No seriously, they do some really good down-covers in their higher end, and some SILLy cheap down pillows - which are very good. I'm a pillow hog and I wear them out (god knows what I do when I sleep) and the cheap pillows they have are great!

You should go there though, the lower-priced range are fine, BUT the material that the down is in is a little "noisy". The higher end (a little more expensive) doesn't make that noise. Yeah, I'm picky.

- uh, I haven't worn my Ikea pillows out. I wore some dead expensive down pillows out, yaknow so the feathers suddenly escape microscopic holes and fly all over the room. A year and a half and my Ikea pillows still look brand new.

I've had good luck with finding bedding on Overstock.com. The selection varies from day to day, but overall it's usually pretty good.

I hates down comforters, because, I do not know what I do, but they always seem to fill the space with little feathers and lint. Even if I stuff them inside one of those comforter covers!

My suggestion would be to look for *silk* comforters in a ChinaTown near you, if you don't mind the change. A quick search online shows this and the prices seem quite reasonable.

Synthetic down.

Land's End has synthetic down blankets, as well as down-filled blankets. I have two synthetic down bed pillows from LandsEnd. They are the best pillows I've ever had. I have washed and dried them several times and they are holding up nicely. I don't know about their blankets, but the pillows are great.

I think the Cuddledown version is less expensive, and you may find other Primaloft blankets elsewhere for a lot less money.

I did order from this place. What I ordered was a down-alternative for my stepdaughter. They shipped it quick, it was exactly what I wanted, and the quality was outstanding. They seem to have good prices on their products, too.

I've had a number of down comforters. Hands down the best was the one from The Company Store.

I can strongly recommend that you stay away from Macy's "hypo-allergenic EcoDown." That was the most feather-shedding, allergic, terrible comforter I've ever had.

I switched over to a synthetic fill comforter when I realized that the EcoDown was threatening to asphyxiate me in the middle of the night with an allergy attack. It's pretty meh - doesn't breathe right, traps moisture as well as heat. But what can you do?

Hi Frisbee! It's good to see you post!

I don't have much advice. I bought a Ralph Lauren down comforter on sale from Macy's. Even though it's designer, the feathers always fall to one side of the comforter (toward your feet). I don't like that.

I don't have any advice, but I do have a corollary question: how do you clean a down pillow? And am I the only one who loves picking the feathers out of it, even through the supposedly "down pillow barrier" zippered pillow case?

I have washed my down comforter in the washing machine. In hot water, with bleach, tumble dry until everything is bone dry. Turns out great. I haven't washed a down pillow though. I have two European square down pillows and little feathers always escape. Drives me batty.
