Do as I say, not as I do. You know how your parents are always telling you what to do for your own good?[More:] While my mother never told me not to hitchhike - maybe because she doesn't know the word in English? - there have been enough bad thriller/horror flicks made for me to know that Bad Things Happen To People Who Get Into Cars With Strangers.

So imagine my surprise when she came home this afternoon to tell me that she hitched a ride this morning to her volunteer gig. She could have woken me up to drive her (she's scared to drive my car) but she was already running late, so instead, she decided to flag down a strange woman who she thought looked nice, and hitched a ride.

I'm still puzzled by her reasoning.
Clearly, phoenixc, you haven't fully grasped the power of the phrase "Because I'm the momma/papa!" yet. It usually takes having a two year old of your very own to boss around for that to fully sink in.

My mom picked up a hitcher (a woman) who claimed her car died on the road. Turns out the woman didn't have a car but just wanted a lift to work. It took everything inside me not to yell at my mom while she told me this. Eventually she admitted that what she did was dangerous and that she'd never do it again. I still felt like grounding her though. *sigh* Mothers.

i picked up a hitchhiker once in the dead of winter, who ended up being some kind of more than slightly addled cokehead or something, who i ended up not being able to shake, and so i drove her all the way to this place in Michigan. After i dropped her off at a bar with her sister who had the subtle look of oh god what happened now, i got to a highway turnaround where two of my tires promptly blew.
There a bit more to that story, but some very jaded automotive people ended up trying to make me believe that kindly turns going unpunished was not what it was about.

Another time, i got a six pack of beer.

I was driving home from my boyfriends' house late/early one night/morning. I saw three teenaged girls hitching in a ritzy area. I stopped, picked them up, and proceeded to berate them on the dangers of hitching so late at night. (I was all of 18/19 years old, maybe four years older than them).
I did have a friend who hitched all the time. But it was the '80s, times were different then.
