It's snowing in Essex! [More:]Snow was forecast and has arrived. The instruction from work is that staff who can get in should. But it's a mile walk to the station and there are already delays to my line so I'll finish my porridge and coffee and then decide what to do. I have plenty of work to do at home if I'm forced to stay in the toasty warm indoors all day.
Snowing in Essex? We should ask essexjan about this!!

Oh, wait...

There's snow in Kent as well! It came down sometime between 3:40am and 6:30am. I know this because I forgot to completely close the gliders' cage last night and one of them escaped. My head was jumped on at 3:40 this morning by a small, furry possum; it was an interesting way to wake up.

London, too? I'm taking the redeye tomorrow night. Would any area bunnies who can't make the 16th meetup like to get together? I have plans for the 12th and 13th, but other than that I'm free until the 18th--it doesn't have to be a pub/bar.

What 16th meetup?

Booooo! Booooo!

Despite the news talking about snow "all over the UK" it's only reached as far as Sheffield. Looks like I'm going to miss out on it completely.

Over on mefi there was talk about getting together in London, but nothing's been confirmed for the venue yet.

This one.

No snow oop North? Snow balls.

Yep, it's snowing here in lovely North London too. I had a very nice walk to work - I like a bit of snow me.

4 inches so far here in the Midlands, and it's still coming down... :)

Meanwhile. No Snow. (translates to british). We just spent seven and a half days below zero, then jumped up to 7 for all of six hours, and now we're back below zero for the next week. It's -9 right now, but I have to drive to Chicago, where it is currently a brisk -20. (Americans, that's negative even to us.)

Can we trade? I like snow.

Oh yeah. "It's snow in Essex!" Is that the code word for the resistance to attack the railroad station?

We made a snowman!

Is snow in London a rare event?
posted by Mitheral 08 February | 10:41
Damn you chrismear!

We have snow, but it's the vague unsettling kind of snow that does NOTHING to make me happy.

Mitheral, last time we had snow down here it melted after about 2 hours. So for there to be enough snow to make a snowman is a big deal.

Best ever snowman picture.

It snows quite often in the hilly bits of Wales, Scotland and northern England, but for the rest of us, most winters go by with barely any snow. Because of the Gulf Stream, Britain is warmer than it should be, given its latitude.

Still snowing in the Midlands, it had started to melt but after it goes dark it will all freeze, which will be fun in the morning...

The corollary of the rarity of snow is that the southern half of the UK is completely unprepared for it, always.

Weird, I had this image in my mind of winter in London being cold and miserable. Too much Christmas Carol I guess.

So I'll have to pack my snowboots then :-(.

I'm not bringing my laptop with me, but I'll be checking in regularly at an internet cafe or the hotel business center. My email is in both mefi and mecha profiles.
