31 January 2007

To go with Miko's sad thread, I'm freaking! [More:]I'm scheduled to move into my new apartment this weekend. I've conscripted friends, rented a truck and set up an appointment with the cable company to have the internet installed (Lord knows I can't go more than a couple hours without checking my email). I got a phone call from Tom, the new landlord, on Mon saying that there's been some issues with the electrical system and the inspection. Apparently the old electrician installed a feed from the city to the house that may not be adequate for 3 apartments. He was fired for repeatedly not showing up to finish the work. So Tom hired a new electrician who says the feed isn't up to code and will have to be replaced for the inspector to pass the unit. Tom doesn't know if the new electrician is trying to scam him or if the old one was since he was assured that the feed was more than enough for 3 apartments. The inspection was supposed to take place on Mon, which would have resolved the electrical issue, but due to a large fire in another city the inspector couldn't make it (apparently we only have one inspector for multiple cities?? WTF?). So he's supposed to come today afterwards Tom is supposed to call me to tell me if I can move in on Sat or if I have to postpone the move for a couple days. I'm freaking because I've scheduled this in and because of labwork, my friends' labwork and our generally random lives it makes rescheduling a bitch. I expressed my unhappiness with the situation but Tom is adamant it's not his fault (which it isn't but he's the messenger so I get to "shoot" him by right) and that he will reimburse me for any additional costs incurred as a result of this. But I'm still freaking out. Just tell me it'll be OK and that everything will go smoothly. I hate moving.
Even if you can't move in on Saturday, you should be able to park your stuff there.

It's OK. Everything will go smoothly. And if there are bumps in the road, remember things could be much worse.

Hmmm, I think we all need a group hug today. And donuts. And liquor.

And chocolate. Yeah what mischief said - could you at least get the major stuff there that you need the extra hands for - like you'd leave your luggage at the hotel until you could check in?

I moved two weeks ago, and was freaking out even without any major screw-ups.

Don't worry, make sure you can move your stuff, if not yourself in as planned, enjoy a hotel on your landlord's dime, and one way or another, you'll be moved in two weeks, and maybe you'll get a good story out of it.

That's what I'm planning so far. Moving everything except some clothes, food and my sleeping bag.

After I posted this I saw mgl's thread and now I feel silly. It's that big a concern in the grand scheme but sometimes I forget that.

Moving is the bain of my existence and I would not wish it on my worst of enemies. I hope you survive.

Everything will go smoothly, I promise. You'll be okay. Don't forget to breathe. *whuffle*

Hee, I just saw you advised mgl to breathe too!

It's one of those things! An inconvenience, but I hope, swiftly over. Now get to figurin' out how you can run up some expenses to be reimbursed for! Carte blanche!

Moving sucks. Sucks SUCKS SUCKS! Just hang in there, one way or another you will get moved.

Moving sucks, but moving your shit in if there is an electrical issue sounds like a recipe for a fire.
You don't want to lose your stuff, insurance or not.
Let them do the necessary electrical repairs and don't get your stuff burned.
I once lost all my shit in an apartment fire thanks to a roommate.

Make that new electrician produce a license, damnit.
oh and chill, a move is stress inducing, it'll be fine.

Sounds like it's main service (IE: the cable between the street and building), you should be fine.

Yeah, it should be fine, particularly because the power is probably turned off. If you are worried, ask the landlord to switch the power off to your unit at the main board.
