Emcee Squared-ers, what did you think? I just wondered what your feedback is on working on the new Emcee². [More:]

JUST A FEW THOUGHTS! That’s all. No biggy. It’s all cool and fun as it is!
;-)

I really enjoyed it, but I felt it was a little constraining and it hurt my inspiration. 200x200 pixels feels kinda like making a favicon.

Also, I think a small (600x600) square emcee that is going to look good requires a kind of overall scheme or pattern that extends across all of it. Otherwise we have a bunch of tiny panels that are unrelated except for transitions at the margins.

Doing an Emcee² in which we can all see all preceding squares as we go might be good, so we can plan out a “feel” or “pattern” that extends across the entire piece. Maybe larger, too: displayed on one page in a smaller version, but clickable to see the larger panels and entirety.

And how would you folks feel about trying an Emcee or, more appropriately, an Emcee² in which someone does NOT do a square but plays “cleanup”? (Regular Emcees tend to have nice transitions.) Let’s say we leave our transitions a little sketchier than usual and someone goes back and sees the whole and improves the transitions?
Has taz posted the Emcee squares yet? This was my first emcee, so it's difficult for me to compare. Contrarily, I thought it was a bit constraining to work with two whole panels(rather than just a tiny bit of information); since both my panels were thematical pretty similar, my corner panel was easy on one hand and hard on another. I dunno, I feel like too many rules would spoil all the fun! :)

I liked it, mostly just because it was different.

I thought it was a bit constraining to work with two whole panels...

I see your point totally. For me, it felt really good that I had more info to allow me to extend the other panels coherently into mine and make a better transition. For example, there was an object in the panel above mine that I slightly extended into mine, and seeing the whole object let me know exactly what it was and how my panel would relate to it.

But then again, extending the other panels into mine ate up more of my precious 200x200, heh.

I participated in Team 2. It was fun, but working on a 200x200 square was difficult. My square is probably too busy. If given the chance to do it over, I would've done it differently. I had several ideas in mind, but couldn't transfer those ideas on a 200 x 200 square without it looking silly.

If there is another amateur talent emcee in the future I wouldn't mind participating. I can't wait to see the squares.

I like it both ways, being the easy emcee slut that I am.

I would like to do one without any distinct background patterns though. It's hard to transition a full background - any way you transition or stop it, it looks too abrupt.

It was my first one, too, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I liked the challenge of the small work area, though.

200 pixels didn't change right?

Like ico, I love doing whatever. It's just fun to play with the bunnies. I don't so much like the idea of having seeing all the preceding squares, though, or the "designated transitor". I like the mystery of not seeing the whole until the end and doing the transitions is main challenge.

If we need volunteers to do the emails and posts, I'd be willing to step up for the next one. Are there other duties an emcee organizer is responsible for?
posted by danostuporstar 29 January | 10:46
When I organized them I posted here to announce it and find out who wanted to participate, emailed the person going first, got the panel back from that person, made a slice of the edge of it, emailed that to the next person, and so on. Just save everything. It's really easy, and not much of a time sink at all. If you have the time, and you're online every day, it's a piece of cake. Posted updates are good too - it keeps everyone happy and you won't get individual emails asking what's up with the emcee.

This was my first Emcee, so I would need to participate in the other one and see the results of this one to really have an opinion.

overall scheme or pattern that extends across all of it
I tried to sort of match the theme of the square I was given, so that you could see how the two were related. I don't want to spoil any surprises by saying what it was, but I just wanted to say that I took this into account.
But yeah, perhaps a theme to begin with would be good.

I also want to see how "artsy" everyone else's are, especially Team 1.

I suppose I would have to reserve judgment in this area until I have seen the assembled piece, although I see your point.

I had a corner square that had two similarly themed neighboring squares, so I attempted to bridge that gap visually and thematically. That is, I attempted to create my own composition when looked at in an isolated scope, but one that would tie into the others without being too distracting.

It will be interesting to see if my corner is completely baseless in the context of the other three... although I think the center square really had the opportunity to set the mood here. All in all, it's hard to say without seeing the final results.

All I know for sure is that I had a tremendous time filling out those pixels and even though I was on the "non artistic" team I think everyone did a really good job and most importantly it appeared that everyone had fun completing their squares... which is all that really matters! If everyone is pleased with the results here I think it'd be a fun semi-regular activity... I wasn't so hot on the multiple panel horizontal emcees that were originally posted, but these 9-person squares tweaked my interest as they seemed to be a little more organic.... next time we'll have to do a field of hexagons to really bend our minds :)

ooh... by the way, since we're all here, I've now sent box and agro their square info for the final two squares on #2 (we had a bit of a delay there, but the end is in sight!)...

and #1 is done!

I just have to put it on a page and upload it.

Also, if someone wants to start up a new one of either kind, or something different, I'm ready. Since I did the center square on #1 this time, I haven't had any connecting action in ages. Ready, ready, ready to rock and roll.

I've got a "quilt" idea that I'll propose tomorrow. If everybody hates it, I'll volunteer to the emcee-squared again.
posted by danostuporstar 29 January | 12:58
I actually like the idea of a quilt. I think I'd try that.

This was my first mc, so I really don't know how my effort compared to others. I know that it took 3 tries to get an effect to work right; one thing that hung me up was that when I saved my square as a jpg, it "feathered" the pixels into each other and the whole thing got rather "muddy". Only after submitting some of my concepts to taz did I realize that if you save them in Paint as a bmp, the colors don't change.

Ooh... an idea for a quilt design: instead of sharing adjacent squares, maybe share diagonals, with the idea that (counting left-to-right, then top-down) Squares 1, 3, 7 & 9 complement Square 5, Squares 4 & 6 complement 2, and 8 complements Squares 4 & 6?
posted by Doohickie 29 January | 13:07
Wow! I'm hot on this quilt idea: Maybe the squares will all share a division into smaller triangles/squares, and 1, 3, 5, 7 & 9 would share one color theme while 2, 4, 6 & 8 would share another color theme. My wife has done quilt square exchanges and this is the way they structured things.

Interesting, Doohickie. Sounding more complicated than what I had in mind, but those ideas are definately worth considering.

(And thanks, taz...can't wait to see it...meant to say that in previous comment.)
posted by danostuporstar 29 January | 13:17
dano... I realize it's maybe not along the lines of traditional mc, but it might prove interesting to do something other than try to have seemless transitions between squares.

(Then again, maybe that goes against what mc is all about?)
posted by Doohickie 29 January | 14:24
A truly masochistic brainstorm: traditional 1-dimenional emcee, small frame size—where each panel is a 16-frame animated gif. You get a 15px-wide 16-frame animation that you then have to build off of.

I dare you. I triple-dog-dare you.

cortex, that does sound fun. Is there a way to import ani gifs into photoshop? I've made a few in photoshop, but never can keep the ani-bit going when I open an existing one up in PS for editing.
posted by danostuporstar 29 January | 22:29
No idea on implementation, dano. Never tried it, brand new to PS (Elements).
