I love you guys so much I sent you this whole album (YSI) [More:]

Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos - The Dust of Retreat

I can't explain how good this one is. It's my favourite album of 2006 and 2006 was a BANNER year for good albums.

Also, this is the first (and probably only) time I've been able to recommend something to my very modern-music savvy boyfriend, and not only had he never heard of them, he was blown away by the album.

Give it a listen.

yo, danf, I have frisbeegirl's entire upload set and even have a separate playlist for it... but it'd probably take a year to upload it via my bootlegnet. if all else fails, email me cos I can burn a DVD with the whole playlist on it... I know this cos I burned a backup after going thru that 3+ hour download :]
why do I always have to be logged in to YSI to get any of LFR's files? Any other time I click a YSI link it automatically takes me to the download, not the log in page. Why is that? It only happens with LFR's files.

goml it's likely because mine are always so large. I think there's a size limit after which you have to be registered to download.

Thank you lfr. . .both for this music and for the frisbeegirl offer. I think Taz can handle that one later on, but I am excited about Margot and the Nuclear So So's.

What more can you tell me about them?

danf: they're an 8-piece indie band. They kind of go back and forth between folksy acoustic ballads and rocking indie-pop styled stuff. They use a jazzy, uptempo cello in some of their tracks. "Quiet as a Mouse" is the single of theirs that's been playing on college stations lately, so it should be easy to find a sample of that track.

The lyrics get a bit moody but the singer has great expression and all in all I find them a great balance between catchy pop and intellectualism. They're neither as twee as Sufjan nor as glam-pop as Belle and Sebastian, but there are elements of both of those acts that I think contribute to their sound.

But they're not from Portland. How can they be good?

and on review, here danf, the wikipedia on the band. Now I know why I was one of the first to hear of them out here... they're out of Indianapolis, which is local to the Cincinnati area and since I hail from there I regularly listen to WOXY.com's radio stream. It's likely they were a featured local artist on there because I know WOXY is where I first heard them several months ago.

Har. Actually that's my one and only very eentsy gripe about the Denver area... the music scene out here blows goats. I've lived in both Cincy and Baltimore, and believe it or not both those areas have a fantastic modern / indie /underground music scene. Out here, unless you like bluegrass, you're screwed. And while I like bluegrass okay, there's only so many times I can stomach endless reinterpretation of duelling banjos.

Wow. That's pretty good. Thanks, lfr.

sveskemus: you're quite welcome. this band really does it for me on the whole indie/emo theme. I like the Decemberists quite a lot, but Colin Meloy's voice does sometimes wear on me. Sufjan is awesome but he goes off the intellectual deep end a bit sometimes. And I like Ben Gibbard very very much, but both DCFC and the Postal Service tend to overcook the 'deconstructionism' theme almost to the cliche point. I mean I like all these artists and listen to a ton of their music but Margot is the one band I feel like I'd never ever get tired of.
