17 January 2007

My ex's favorite aunt died suddenly last night. Make sure the people close to you know how you feel about them today. And every other day.[More:]

She woke up and told her husband she wasn't feeling well, tried to stand up and fell, tried to stand up and fell again. He got her in the car, where she completely lost control of her bodily functions. Her last words were "Oh, D., I peed in your car." They think it was an aneurysm.

I only met the woman once or twice, so the loss isn't potent for me personally, but it certainly hammers home the fact that any of us could go at any time for any reason.

I'm not sure what else to say.
Man, so sorry to hear that.

I'm so sorry. I'm glad George knew how much I loved him, because I told him so on the phone, the day before he died.

Oh, man, sorry to hear that, mike. Condolences to your ex.

Losing someone suddenly is the worst (it's happened to me a couple of times), but at the same time, I think it's the way most of us would rather go. Hopefully your ex can find some comfort in that.

So sorry, Mike.

I have an uncle and aunt who are both undergoing treatment for breast cancer. I hadn't seen either but once since my dad died 4 years ago, and had been talking about how I should go see them. It was hard, though, since I was afraid it'd seem like a "one last time" sort of thing. I spoke to my uncle on Christmas day, and he invited me to come for a visit. Last weekend, my wife, daughter, and I went, and had a wonderful time. While it may or may not be the last time (they seemed to be dong well), I'm terribly proud of myself for taking the opportunity.

Years ago, I was in a similar situation with my grad school advisor. He'd resigned from teaching in some disgrace after relapsing into alcoholism. I'd heard he was in the hospital with pneumonia, and my (now ex-)wife encouraged me to go see him. Although it was a bit awkward, I did go, and, again, had a nice visit. He died three days later. Urging me to visit Dr. Kropf was perhaps the best thing that woman ever did for me.

It is sad. My condolences.

I wish her husband called the paramedics/ ambulance when she got up and fell initially and he thought of the hospital.

I understand time was an issue in his mind, hard to think clearly at those moments, but best to let them lie comfortably and call the ambulance. This should be taught to everyone, like a fire drill, for instance.

People, this is important, don't be driving anyone to the hospital. Paramedics and firemen, yes the fire department are prepared to possibly stabilize people for the drive. Believe it or not, firemen have more life saving gear than the ambulances. Usually when you do call the ambulance, the fire department arrives too when you describe the symptoms to the ambulance dispatch.

It is better to go quickly than linger. It's tough when you have to decide to pull the ventilator on someone you love when they're brain dead from a stroke.

The greatest thing was that she had someone there she loved in her last minutes and that is truly wonderful. Dying alone is probably the loneliest one can ever be.

peace
