1) Which toy were you most obsessed with?
she ra and all things star wars

mac and cheese

Kit Kat

I loved Star Wars, all of them. I had tapes off the tv.

What other obsessions did you have? A pet, a friend, a crush, a hobby?
I had a crush on the boy next door. They moved not long after, and although we visited a couple times after, I haven't seen him since.

1) Which toy were you most obsessed with?
Dawn dolls, troll dolls and Barbies. Mostly I dressed them up in weird clothes I made myself, spent hours building houses for them and invented lengthy action/adventures around them.

2) What food were you most obsessed with?
I always pretty much liked everything except lima beans. My mom is a brilliant cook but then we never had "normal" food; sometimes I got all jealous of kids who had mac & cheese out of the box or meatloaf or stuff. We had classic french cuisine or whatever my mom was studying/teaching (she taught cooking classes to housewives on & off for years) at the moment.

4) What book were you obsessed with?
All of them - I read continuosly. Moomins, all the Dr. Doolittles, the Oz books, the Five books, Hardy Boys (better than Nancy Drew), Pippi Longstocking, and then I stumbled across Heinlein (Podkayne of Mars) and Andre Norton at about age 11 or 12.

5) What candy?
Charleston Chew bars, because if you sent in enough wrappers you could win a pony. I must have sent in 10000 wrappers (and I never even liked the candy all that much) yet I never got the pony! Do you believe it?!!? I'm still horrified. I actually liked $100,000 bars the best, or Skye bars, which were weird and rare.

6) TV show?
The Monkees, Star Trek and the Brady Bunch.

7) Movie?
We hardly ever went to movies - I did go see The Towering Inferno which scared me silly, as did Night of Dark Shadows. Jaws - oh man, I couldn't go swimming, even in a pool, for weeks after that.

8) Friends?
Heather & Holly, who were twins. Joanie. Nancy. Hobby.

9) Pet
We had a succession of dogs during those years. Long story. And my cat Tom, who was fabulous & lived to be almost 20. I rode horses seriously (hunter/jumpers) from age 6 - age 16 but I didn't own one in those years. Just Alfie in my early teens.

10) Crush?
Philip Brotherton & John Tower, if you're reading this, I always thought both of you were totally incredible and I could never pick just one.

woo! Iconomy, you must answer as well!

Toy: Barbies

Food: chili

Book: Tons of books! I adored A Wrinkle in Time, The Little Princess, and The Secret Garden, and I think I read all the Mary Poppins series and several of the Oz.

Candy: Sweet Tarts and Atomic Fire Balls

TV: any scifi (Lost in Space, Star Trek), fantasy (Dark Shadows, Bewitched, I Dream of Genie), or SpyTV (The Avengers, Man from Uncle)

Movies: can't remember much, and we didn't really go to see films. I adored Fantastic Voyage, which I saw on TV, though, and any kind of H.G. Wells or Jules Verne sort of thing.

Hobbies: I was kind of obsessed with gems and rocks; I had books and guides, and I used to try to collect as many different kinds as I could, as well as artifacts like arrowheads and bits of old pottery, glass, etc; I loved digging things up. Also, I had a rather complicated imaginary world named "Non" wherein many adventures took place, but I don't remember much about it anymore.

Friends... Not so much. I had friends, but because we moved around a lot, it was way too much of a love 'em and leave 'em situation. Sort of sad, but I also attribute my ability to easily keep myself entertained to this history. I was in love with a boy in fourth grade, who (I much later figured out) was also in love with me. He was a very cute and very naughty son of a preacher man.
posted by taz 13 January | 14:17
Oh, wow... books... I just remembered that I used to read mythology constantly - Greek and Roman, mostly, because I couldn't really find other kinds. AND HOW COULD I FORGET LITTLE WOMEN??????? And "The Yearling" ... and just reading mgl, I was also a Pipi Longstocking fan. Plus, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and my school library had a whole series of biographies; I think I read all of the women's (Florence Nightingale, Harriet Beecher Stowe, etc.) and a few of the men, but I was less interested in them, because they were more covered in the regular curriculum.
posted by taz 13 January | 14:31
And I read everything about Elizabeth 1 I could get my hands on, and pretty much anything British historical, except war stuff. So funny... at first I thought I wouldn't be able to remember what I was reading back then, but it's coming back to me now. Gee.

Toy - Matchbox cars, I would race them Gran Prix style with courses laid out with yarn.

Food - chili, I loved it but as I grew older, I realized my mother's recipe was not necessarily the best, and a lifetime of experimenting with this dish developed.

Book(s) - Wow, so many! The Oz series, the Bobsey Twins series, a series I can no longer recall except one book dealt with piranha, the Childcraft set, a children's encyclopedia with some great maps, the Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedia (3rd grade), Superman & Batman comics, Peanuts collections.

Candy - Cracker Jack

TV show - I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, The Avengers, The Girl from UNCLE

Movie - Earth vs the Flying Saucers, Two On A Guillotine

Other obsessions: an old fenceline of rough-hewn timbers halfway up the hill behind our house, cowpaths, clearings in the woods, fern patches.

Also: Debbie (cute) and Cindy (smart), as well as Judy and Joanne (friends).

My absolute favorite book as a child was a book called "Jenny Lind, The Swedish Nightengale". It was a great book; made a huge impact on me. I was also insane about The Brothers Grimm and Shakespeare and Dickens.

I have to think more about books...

What other obsessions did you have? A pet, a friend, a crush, a hobby?

I lived in a pretty small neighborhood and us kids would run the streets every night. In the summertime we would stay out until 9 o'clock and go "frog hunting." Each of us kids would have a 5-gallon bucket and a flashlight. We would collect hundreds of toads in our buckets, then let them go at the end of the night. We would also dress up in homemade costumes and had something called "horror night" even though it July and no where near Halloween. A lot of the adults in the neighborhood would give us candy or apples or money. But we didn't do it for treats, we just wanted to dress up.

I had two cats at this age. Boo-Boo Kitty and Boo-Boo Baby.

More books (...I'll never stop, I'm afraid): I had the Red and Blue Fairy Books, which I pored over, and The Arabian Nights! And Aesop's Fables, and The Jungle Book! And I loved "Heidi" and - of course - Alice in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass, and Peter Pan, the Narnia books! I'm sure I must have read my first Arthurian stories around this time. Oh, my... I want to re-read all of these now.

How could I forget my friends? My two best friends were Melissa and Brandi. We met when we were four-years old and are lifelong friends. We never have lost contact with one another. The three of us grew up together, went to school together, got in trouble together, worked together. We were inseparable. Devastatingly, Brandi died of breast cancer two years ago at the age of 31.
posted by LoriFLA 13 January | 15:20
taz, I read all those too! I loved the Fairy books. And Swiss Family Robinson (I must have read that 100 times - I wanted to ride an ostrich too) and Heidi and the Narnia books and anything & everything Arthurian - and I also went through an Elizabeth I phase, read everything I could possibly get my hands on. Little Women, Little Men (my favorite of the three) and Jo's Boys. My older brothers' anthology of Stories for Boys which had some hilarious stuff in it and my grandfather's St. Nicholas anthology from 1902 that I still have.
posted by mygothlaundry 13 January | 15:32
The Naria books! I love them so much. I still reread them!

I think my overall biggest obsession as a kid was Archie comic books. I literally counted the days until new ones came out. I literally locked myself in my bedroom to read new ones undisturbed. What a nerd. I was also obsessed with fashion magazines for teenagers - Seventeen, Mademoiselle, Glamour...that kind.

My favorite candy was vanilla Turkish Taffy....yum!

Food? -- meh. my mom is a HORRIBLE cook. I started cooking for myself when I was ~6 in retaliation.

Okay, lfr, I'm beginning to think that our mothers aren't merely similar but are in fact *the same person*, leading a double life. I dealt with her wretched cooking the same way. I still remember her threatening us with, "If you don't finish your lentil soup, you can't have any carob pudding." Yeah, some threat. Mum, if you're gonna cook with lentils, you have to use salt. And other spices. Seriously.

Books: The Narnia books, Harriet the Spy (leading to an obsession with tomato sandwiches), The Phantom Tollbooth, anything Arthurian, the Famous Five, anything by Ray Bradbury, the Hobbit, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and The Great Glass Elevator (still have those), A Wrinkle in Time (and from there to anything by Madeleine L'Engle), anything by Ursula K. LeGuin, god I could go on and on and on

Hobbies: reading. the end.

TV shows: Dr. Who, MASH, Monty Python's Flying Circus (when it came on, though I didn't understand much of it. I could recite many of the sketches by heart, and often did. Probably more often than was necessary.)

Candy: Life Savers. I went through a phase in which I spent my whole allowance on trying every single flavour. This was a period when they were coming out with a bazillion new and sometimes weird flavours. (I still remember clove Life Savers. Bleeeech.) Also Sherbet Fountains, which my relatives would send us from England. And LoLas, these weird pyramidal frozen flavoured sugar-water things.

Movies: Star Wars

1) Which toy were you most obsessed with?
Those polystyrene-wing rubber-band windup aeroplanes. Absolutely incapable of handling any wind whatsoever, but when they worked they were brilliant.

2) What food were you most obsessed with?
Probably macaroni and cheese, I don't really recall.

4) What book were you obsessed with?
The Lion, The witch and the Wardrobe. I didn't get the symbolism, obviously.

5) What candy?
I can't recall, I've never really been one for candy. Probably the stuff that pops when you chew on it. For the entertainment value, mainly.

6) TV show?
Bodger and Badger. But please don't tell anyone.

7) Movie?
I'm not entirely sure, I do remember that ET scared me half to death. As did labyrinth, which I didn't rediscover until many years later.

What other obsessions did you have? A pet, a friend, a crush, a hobby?

Pet: Stick insects. Pretty silly really, they never moved an inch until you opened the vivarium to clean it at which point they ran every which way and were impossible to catch. Eventually my parents took me to set them free on the isle of wight. I wish them all the good luck in the world, but good riddance anyway.

Friend: Probably Luke, a boy I went to school with. Which leads nicely into crush, whiche was this really sweet american girl, who luke also fancied, as these things go. This was before I realised girls were icky and had cooties, obviously.

No hobbies I can think of, at least not until I was a little older.

This is a fun topic! This would have been 1979-1983 for me.

1) Which toy were you most obsessed with?
Barbies, Star Wars figures, and Cat's Eye. Cabbage Patch Kids in the later part of that time period. Oh yes, and Glamour Gals/Dazzle Dolls, which were the perfect size for my dollhouse.

2) What food were you most obsessed with?
Spaghetti. As far as school lunches, I LIVED for the days they served waffles/Little Smokies, pizza, pizza boats, and Peanut Butter Crunch Bars for dessert. Mmmmm.

3) What book were you obsessed with?
I read so many! Anything by Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Nancy Drew, the Little House books, Pippi Longstocking, Harriet the Spy, Yours Til Niagara Falls, Abby, Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood, The Girl With The Silver Eyes, Diary of Anne Frank, The Cat Ate My Gymsuit, etc. etc. One very odd obsession (for me) was the Elizabeth Gail series, by Hilda Stahl. They're very Christian fiction books and I'm Jewish, but I liked them. I could go on and on here!

4) What candy?
Kit Kat, Nestle Crunch, candy buttons, grape Bubble Yum, Sweet Tarts, Good 'n Plenty, Tart 'n Tiny (old-school Tart 'n Tiny without the candied coating), those wax bottles with the liquid in them...just to name a few. I was all about candy.

5) TV show?
Silver Spoons was my favorite by far. (As an aside, they have episodes available on Comcast On Demand now! INCLUDING THE ONE WITH MENUDO! I am so watching that)

6) Movie?
E.T.

7) What other obsessions did you have? A pet, a friend, a crush, a hobby?
Pet: My Welsh Terrier, Winnie
Friend: My best friend's name was Shawn. She was two years older than me and lived two houses down. From the time I was 4 until the time I was 12 or so, we were inseparable.
Crush: I had quite a few. ; )
Hobby: Collecting dollhouse furniture

When you were between the ages of 6 -10

1) Which toy were you most obsessed with?

Once I got my bike it eclipsed everything else, but before that I'd have to go with matches.

2) What food were you most obsessed with?

I don't remember a particular food, but I did like a forest green sugary drink called Cottee's Cordial. I wishing for something like a beer hat so that I could walk around and take a sip whenever I wanted.

4) What book were you obsessed with?

I remember reading a bunch of H.G. Wells when I was sick once and having some cinematic fever dreams, but I think it was near the end of that age range that I first read Lord of the Rings. That really freaked me out because it was obviously fiction but seemed pretty realistic to me at the time. I thought that maybe should have been illegal or something.

5) What candy?

Sherbert (the fizzy powder - I grew up in Australia)

6) TV show?

Dr. Who

7) Movie?

Star Wars

What other obsessions did you have? A pet, a friend, a crush, a hobby?

Atari 2600. My friends and I played it until my mother would unplug it at the wall and throw us out of the house. She almost never got mad otherwise.

I would dig up the backyard to make dams and rivers and run water through them.

I loved my cat and the kittens it had.

I had a crush on my cousin. Mostly because of her vast collection of Star Wars action figures and David Bowie records.

Mmmmkay, late to the party, but brought an extra 6-pack just in case...

1) Toy: Mr. Machine and other toy robots; Lincoln logs, Erector sets, Girder-and-Panel building sets, but oddly, not Lego; the Creepy Crawlers Thingmaker (and I NEVER burned myself); and a James Bond Spy Briefcase that shot things and held all my secret stuff

2) Food: Beef-a-Roni (by Chef Boy-ar-Dee), Hot dogs, in buns or in beans, my only two veggies: corn and green beans, and my non-Italian mother's Lasagna, the only dish I learned to make as a kid (It was like another building toy!)

3) ...is a magic number

4) Book: Went through multiple fave-book phases including the 1960's editions of Tom Swift and "The Phantom Tollbooth" (can't remember half of 'em)

5) Candy: Tootsie Roll (chocolate addiction started early and badly)

6) TV Show: TV in general... I kept "lists" on dozens of comedies, sci-fi and spy shows, clipping episode descriptions from TV Guide and writing the titles of every individual segment on the Bullwinkle, Yogi Bear and other similar cartoon shows. If I'd kept that stuff, I would've set up the first Episode Guide site on the Web. But I didn't.

7) Movie: One stood out... "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World"... walked to the theater for a Saturday matinee; long movie and I stayed to see it again; it was my longest time AWOL from parents until I was well into high school...

8) Pet: Had only one during that time, a basset hound named Farnsworth. I won't go into the circumstances under which I had to give him up, but I NEVER forgave my parents.

9) Friend: No single best friend until I was in 7th grade - I either hung out with a group or by myself.

10) Crush: There was a girl-literally-next-door who I got my first pre-adolescent feelings for, but I don't know if she EVER knew. Fortunately, we were both part of a 'neighborhood group'.

11) Hobby: Tried many; never picked up enough skill at anything to not lose interest, and those TV Lists were my most significant collection.

Now I realize all the reasons I grew up to be so weird (especially 6, 8, 9 & 10).
