IDFilter: Name Some Good Interior Design Aesthetics Books! [More:] Hey kidlets! Miko and I were talking about our personal aesthetics in room design the other evening, and I realized I didn't really know mine.

So I come to you Interior Design-haidz for some advice. What are some good books on use of color, different eras, etc. that you could recommend for a newbie trying to figure out what kind of room he'd be most comfortable living in?

So far, my "aesthetics" are skewing to a combo platter of a French monastery mixed with a French cafe built inside of a southwest adobe or strawbale house.

Go figure. And go to your bookshelves, minions!

If you want to know MY aesthetics, you'd want to look at this book. (Which appears to be out of print, dammit.) I have a whole series of these, ranging from the 1920s to the 1970s, but the 1950s one is the one I wish I could just live inside of.

Taschen has some great architecture and design books (mixed in with all their pretentious art stuff).

A quick way to figure this out is to go to a library or bookstore with a decent magazine selection. There are a bazillion different interior decorating/home magazines and some of them are specific to different styles/eras. Identify the types of rooms/furniture/doodads you actually like. That'll narrow down the books (and phrases to search for, etc) that you'll be most interested in.

Well son of a bitch, LT.

I suggest you don't need to do any fancy book learnin' on this subject. It'll just cloud your mind.

Paint the walls a nice earthy color, get a couple Navajo rugs to hang on the wall (bring in the influence of the southwest without actually having to live in those types of houses) - since you'll be rocking the monastery look - there's no need to get a bunch of furniture or doodads. Just nail a crucifix to the wall and get yourself a cafe table.

Actually, you know. What type of room are you interested in making your own? If it's a living area - then yes to the cafe table. If it's a bedroom...well then ignore the cafe table and just throw a mattress on the floor.

A man just came over and swept my chimney! || Another vote for Occhiblu's broccoli thang.
