I normally wouldn't do this on MeCha, but I'm desperate. Anyone (ANYWHERE) want a couple of dogs? A few weeks ago I rescued two incredibly beautiful, loving, intelligent young dogs from a vacant farm where they'd been abandoned as pups. Blackie and Lady were skin and bones when the realtor found them and began feeding them, but then the realtor wanted them gone, so I took them in. [More:]

They'd been on the farm a long time. Blackie had a collar that was much too tight that he'd obviously grown into. On the morning I picked them up they'd slept in the barn, but Lady still had icicles hanging from her belly fur.

I live in a small place with four cats (who are hiding upstairs for weeks now, as the dogs have hunting instincts), and I'm nearly out of my head, as much as I love these babies.

I'll do anything I can to find a good home for these kids, including deliver them out-of-state (I'm currently in Ohio.) No adoption fees necessary. Please pass this along to anyone who might be interested.

Description:
Blackie is almost totally Black Lab and Lady is probably a German Shepherd/Labrador mix. They weigh 50# and 70# . Blackie and Lady are spayed, neutered and vetted, have had ALL shots ands vaccinations and are worm-free, with no kennel-cough. Both are VERY intelligent and incredibly affectionate and they LOVE people and other dogs. They love to play tug-o-war together. They're not so good with cats. Having hunted and foraged for food on the farm makes them not good bets to have around small animals. They're very bonded and very much a couple and, IF possible, should stay together. They could use a fenced-in yard, as they're very active and love to romp and play and run.
Oh shane, if I didn't already have two dogs I'd take them, but I do. I will tell you, though, from my experience with a crazy blind coonhound who had major, major hunting instincts, that it is possible to get them to a place where they will stop hunting the cats. It takes time and work, but it's doable; they can totally learn the difference between squirrels and cats and will even get to be friends and very protective of "their" cats.

Thanks, MGL. But my place is a little too small for six animals even if they'd get along.

Shane, you are such an angel. They sound wonderful; if I some space (even a little), and lived in the U.S., I swear I would take them right now.

Awww, they're precious; I hope you can find lovely homes for them.

I'll send this on to my friends... Unfortunately, we live in a small apartment in Chicago and aren't home enough to take care of them. :(

If I had the space or the time, they seem like great dogs. Good luck, shane!

I would so love to help but can't. I hope they find a nice home soon.

If you do end up having to split the two dogs up I could most likely help you.
A friend of mine is looking for a dog. She lives in an apartment (well, the entire story of a house, so it's pretty big), but goes for long walks all the time so they'd get a lot of outside time. And, our city's putting in a new dog park.
She's a single mom, and between her and her daughter (about 2ish, IIRC), any animal they get would be spoiled rotten with attention.

Here's the best I can do for you: Labrador Retriever rescue groups. There's a phone number in Madison. They may be able to put you in touch with someone in their network of Lab lovers who knows of a good home.

I have a cousin of sorts who is a greyhound rescuer and always has about eight dogs in her house, at least two of them "fosters".

Thanks, again, all.

kellydamnit, thanks so much--I'll keep you posted!

I MIGHT HAVE FOUND A FOSTER HOME!

I sent e-mails about this poor deaf boxer pup:

...to a few hundred people. He was due to be put down today, but someone (else) found him a home. One of his rescuers called me and might help me foster the labs.

GHAAAAH! Now I'll feel like I'm abandoning them!

I don't have the space for it, but rescuers are the coolest people. Some have little more than garage space or an extra room in their house, yet constantly rescue and foster dogs from the kennels just before the dogs are put down. Amazing people. The clean-up and care and vet bills and hassles are nerve-wracking and nuts, but they do it.

Shane. Put an ad up on petfinder.com - they have a classifieds area.

I have two cats + a dog. If I didn't have cats I'd consider taking one of them.
